2008 Season Outlook
Erik Darnell is one of just 2 drivers in a particular unique situation in 2008 - Rookie of the Year competitors running for the driver championship full-time despite having no prior NNS starts. Darnell joins Justin Allgaier as a driver hand-picked to be a full-time Rookie contender, despite neither one of them recording an NNS start to date. Darnell, though, unlike Allgaier, does have national NASCAR experience with 51 Truck Series starts, including a win this past season. He'll be the only driver championship contender for Roush, so clearly he has a leg up on the other developmental drivers in terms of favoritism with the Cat in the Hat. Drew Blickensderfer, a highly respected Roush crew chief, will be on the pit box for Darnell, which should be huge for him. He'll be able to get comfortable in these cars with a good setup underneath him each week, especially knowing that he's in Carl Edwards's former equipment. Being a championship contender is probably out of reach this season for Darnell, though, but he could absolutely contend for a win here and there if things fall the right way.
