44th Bass Pro Shops MBNA 500:
In a quick and quiet race, 42 cars have started their engines and began the Bass Pro Shops MBNA 500. Jeff Gordon took pole and gave a show of direction.
Boogity, boogity, boogity! Let's go racing boys!
Atlanta is a fast track. Nevertheless, the race itself was very quiet. Few accidents and major disputes entertained the public for three hours and fifteen minutes. Until the first round of pit stops, there were major disputes between much of the grid. Could be teammates or not, but there they were fighting for position.
After a few laps, Ryan Newman took the lead from Jeff Gordon. Always came constant, followed by Mark Martin, Gordon himself or Steve Park. Then came the first round of pit stops.
Despite the pit stops, the race came with everything and exciting contests. So far no yellow flag had happened.
But it was gone in no time. The first yellow flag came after a hit that caused four dropouts (Rudd, Nemechek, Harvick and Spencer) and turns then the second came with a beat that pulled Robby Gordon and slowed the rhytm of drivers like Elliott Sadler, Michael Waltrip and Jamie McMurray. The latter took the rear end heavily damaged. On the restart, Ryan Newman had been leading with a great difference.
But the car needed a lot of fuel... and it was being missed. Ryan Newman was leaving and Jeff Gordon took the lead on lap 292.
From there, he had to go saving gasoline for not having to make pit-stop or abandon for lack of fuel. But once he took the race to victory.
In contrast, the post-race gave notice the "miracles" that the pilots did with gasoline. Except Jeff Green, Bobby Labonte and Larry Foyt, all "survivors" had to leave the car for about three seconds slower in the final laps to not have to leave the race. Notice to the upper right of the screens that will pass, and a comparison with the best lap time of the last lap that each pilot made.

Kurt Busch
