Race 3
The IROC Series made their 3rd stop of 1976 at the Riverside International Raceway, in Riverside, California.
James Hunt led the field to the green flag but it was Bobby Allison who would drive up from his 4th starting position and would take the lead heading down the Backstretch. A year prior at Riverside, Allison started 5th and led 25 of the 30 for his first ever IROC win and in the next event Allison would win Daytona and got duel trophies: the race and championship trophies.
With that in mind, Allison also remembered what the late Mark Donohue had done in 1974 winning the final two races and the championship and Allison completed the first stage easily, winning in the third event at Riverside for the second year in a row by leading all thirty laps and taking the points lead with one race remaining.
Other Noticeables:
Bobby Allison scored his 1st win of the year,
Allison led 1 time for 30 laps, including all 30 laps,
It was the 3rd win of his career in the IROC Series and his first since 1975 at Daytona; 4 races ago,
Bobby Allison, who finished 1st, is the new points leader, leading David Pearson by 6 points
Heading into the final race of the season, mathematically all twelve drivers still have a shot of winning the championship
