1992 Miller Genuine Draft 500 NASCAR's return to the Tricky Triangle came around the midway point in the season. The championship fight was heating up, and no one was giving any quarter. Neil Bonnett started on the pole. Throughout the day, several crashes occurred. But none as severe as this one: Davey Allison suffered a broken right forearm, a dislocated wrist and a severe concussion. Terry Labonte won the race. The first thing he did upon getting to victory lane was asking whether or not Davey was okay. Following the race, Katie Sammonds lost some ground on Bill Elliott. Next stop: Talladega.

News from the Track Oldsmobile Calls It Quits Reports have surfaced that General Motors is planning to cut its NASCAR program down to Chevrolet and Pontiac. Although Oldsmobile has been running well this season, the fact is that GM is hemorrhaging money on having three makes in NASCAR. Therefore, Oldsmobile will pull factory support from the NASCAR Winston Cup Series after 1992. There is no indication as to whether Oldsmobile will pull out of other NASCAR series, or the ARCA Permatex SuperCar Series. With Oldsmobile's departure, this leaves only three manufacturers in NASCAR: Chevrolet, Pontiac, and Ford. Toyota Is Out; Horton Motorsports Shuts Down Toyota has ended its trial run in NASCAR due to inconclusive results. As a result, the team they were subsidizing, Horton Motorsports, has shut down. This now leaves an all-American field of cars in the NASCAR Winston Cup Series. Kelly Walker to PCR? Rumors have circulated that Kelly Walker is planning to leave Precision Products Racing after 1992 to join Pacific Coast Racing in a fourth car. Walker only responded "I don't even know". It's no secret that Walker is rather close with PCR driver Katie Sammonds, with underground rumors suggesting something more is going on between them. NASCAR Runs Tire Test at Indy, May Lead to Something Bigger Following the Nazareth 400, nine drivers were invited to participate in a Goodyear tire test at the world-famous Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Credible sources have claimed that NASCAR is actually testing the viability of running a Winston Cup points race at the historic track. Early reports have been favorable, according to these same sources. SAFER Car to Herald More Manufacturers? Early concept designs for the SAFER Car, set to debut in 1997, have been leaked. According to insiders, the new template is much more aerodynamic than the current cars. So far, several different style of cars have reportedly been seen, including the Chevrolet Monte Carlo, Ford Thunderbird, Pontiac Grand Prix, even manufacturers not currently running in NASCAR, such as the Dodge Intrepid and a generically-badged Mercury. Whether this means Dodge and Mercury are returning in the near-future, or if this is just a test of different styles, is unknown. Mercury pulled factory support after 1980, and Dodge after 1984; Chrysler-badged vehicles can still be seen in the ARCA Permatex SuperCar Series, and Dodge vehicles can also be found in the NASCAR Goody's Dash Series.

1992 DieHard 500 Alan Kulwicki started on the pole for another crazy race at Talladega. Several wrecks broke out throughout the day, and many drivers such as Andy and Belle Sammonds, Richard Petty, and Geoff Bodine were involved. By the end of the day, one driver no one ever thought would win again took the checkers. And who was he? AJ Foyt, winning his first points-paying NASCAR race since winning at Ontario in 1972. Katie Sammonds was contending for the win when she fell victim to a familiar issue from 1991: being wrecked by lap traffic. As a result, she has lost second place in points to Neil Bonnett. Andy and Belle, despite being involved in the first wreck, were able to nurse each other's cars to the finish, coming home 21st and 24th, respectively; Andy was seven laps down, while Belle was nine. Next stop: Progressive.

1992 Jack Daniels 500 Kyle Petty started on the pole for yet another exciting race at Progressive Speedway. Intense multicar battles for the lead unfolded before a record CBS audience. Andy Sammonds was hoping to get his second win of the season, as he was one of the favorites. Alas, he and the other Pacific Coast drivers fell victim to crashes. In another incredible upset, AJ Foyt won his second race in a row. Katie Sammonds has fallen to fourth in standings thanks to her DNF, passed by Darrell Waltrip. Next stop: Watkins Glen.

1992 Budweiser At The Glen Thunder Road marked the next stop in the 1992 NASCAR Winston Cup season, now shaping up to be an intense title fight. Dennis Malone started on the pole for a road course race full of strategies. Only two cautions came out during the day: one that took out Darrell Waltrip, and one at lap 51 to put rain tires and windshield wipers on when it began to rain. Through the downpour, Neil Bonnett cruised to his second win of the season, with Andy Sammonds finishing second. As a result of Waltrip failing to finish, Katie Sammonds retook third place in the points standings. Next stop: Michigan.

1992 Champion Spark Plugs 400 Mark Martin started on the pole for a particularly intense Michigan race. The drama and tension of the 1992 season is heating up heading towards autumn, and drivers are done holding back. A relatively clean race, the chess match between the championship competitors saw many daring moves and devious tactics coming into play. But through it all, Rusty Wallace cruised to his second win of 1992. Andy Sammonds finished 9th, which he considered another victory. Next stop: Milwaukee.

1992 Mountain Dew 400 Andy Sammonds was able to win the pole at Milwaukee Mile again, giving him a season sweep for Milwaukee poles. After receiving his pole award, Katie jokingly gave him a broom, which he started playing like a guitar when Delma Cowart started playing KISS music on a boombox (some say this wasn't a coincidence on the part of the "clown prince of racing", and that he was in on the joke). Andy ran a clean race all day, managing to finish in 5th. The win, meanwhile, went to Alan Kulwicki. With his onslaught of strong finishes, Andy has broken into the top ten in points, while Katie has once again dropped to fourth. Next stop: Bristol.

1992 Bud 500 Another race at Thunder Valley, another heart-stopping struggle for the win. This was yet another clean race (whatever is up with the Bristol 1991 track.ini, I have GOT to copy it to the other Bristols), with only a few cautions, a sharp contrast to the wreck-fests at other short tracks in the past few years. Andy Sammonds led early, before losing it during the first caution period. He still ran a strong race and finished 4th. The win went to Neil Bonnett. Andy is now 8th in points, having once again struggled through adversity to make a spectacular comeback. Neither Katie nor Belle finished, Belle because of a suspension failure, and Katie because of a crash. However, Katie was scored higher that points leader Bill Elliott, but this was offset by Bonnett's win. Next stop: Darlington.

1992 Heinz Southern 500 The Labor Day weekend tradition continued this past Sunday. Andy Sammonds started on the pole for the hallowed race. Pacific Coast Racing as a whole was very, very strong throughout the day, and all three backed this up by finishing strong, with Andy finishing 7th, Belle finish 8th, and Katie, in an absolutely dominating performance, was able to take the checkers and score her fourth win of the season, becoming the first woman to win the Southern 500. Richard Petty, in his final Southern 500, finished 31st. Andy has moved up one more spot in the points standings, while Katie still trails behind Bill Elliott in 4th. Next stop: Richmond.

1992 Miller Genuine Draft 400 Bill Elliott started on the pole for yet another chaotic Richmond race. As the laps ticked down and the DNFs piled up, the intensity ticked up. Alan Kulwicki was able to pass Rusty Wallace on the last lap for the win. Next stop: Dover.
