Mobil 1 and Interstate Batteries to split sponsorship of #18 Joe Gibbs Racing announced today that current sponsor Interstate Batteries has resigned with the organization through the 2010 season. The company has sponsored the #18 car for Gibbs since the team's inception, and has been Bobby Labonte's sponsor since 1995. However, beginning in 2008, Interstate Batteries will only be on the hood for 18 races, and will split the schedule with new sponsor Mobil 1. "Unfortunately, the economy isn't feasible to fund the entire schedule for Joe's team", said Interstate Batteries Chairman Norm Miller. "But God is with us, and will show us the way to success, and I think Mobil 1's offer to split the schedule with us was divine intervention." Team President J.D. Gibbs was also happy about having two primary sponsors on board: "I think you're going to see this become a lot more common in the Cup Series. The economy is starting to collapse around us so fewer and fewer companies will be able to foot the bill for an 11 month season so the days of drivers only having one paint scheme are eventually going to become a thing of the past." Both Interstate and Mobil 1 will be with the team through the 2010 season, and Labonte will be with the team through 2009. The two companies join The Home Depot and FedEx as primary sponsors on the Cup Series team, along with Busch Series primaries GameStop and Z-Line Designs. (ESPN.com) (5/7/07)
