38th Subway 400:
In a thrilling race at North Carolina Speedway, the 42-car field gave a show to the public. With Tony Stewart on the pole, the start came.
The track has always been a problem in a matter of keeping the car: Jeff Green had problems early in the race, but returned to the track two laps behind the leader. Then came the rookie Tony Raines, who had other engine problems and returned six laps behind leader Tony Stewart. On lap 33, Jeff Burton also had car trouble. Even made a pit-stop, but was forced to abandon the race. Robby Gordon, Jimmie Johnson, Matt Kenseth and Casey Mears were also problems and abandoned.
Gradually the grid was dividing into small groups, usually five to eight cars. The contest for leadership was a case apart: the pole Stewart came always leading the pack, being chased or chasing drivers like Jimmie Johnson, Kurt Busch and Ricky Rudd. Emphasis on the latter two fought a great race from the 110.
Michael Waltrip hit the wall and there was a yellow flag, a round of pit stops, along with the restart. It was completely insane, especially by the big disputes that occurred in 3-wides up to ten laps after the restart.
After a few laps, Rusty Wallace took the lead. We had a restart and laggards completely disrupted the race who had been fighting for the lead. Gradually Mark Martin was coming and caught a beautiful clash with #2 and #20.
The last yellow flag joined the drivers and initiated the end of the race. Gradually pilots who fought victory were separating, but it's time for the pit-stop. Dale Jarrett only changed the right tires and happened to be at the back of the leader, fighting for victory.
Mark Martin had been leading but his car malfunctioned and he goes to the pits for repairs. Rusty Wallace took the lead, and after the pit-stop on lap 384 the lead got for Dale Earnhardt Jr., who won the Subway 400.
DNQs: Christian Fittipaldi (#44), Ken Schrader (#49), Kerry Earnhardt (#83), Derrike Cope (#37)
Margin of victory: 2.547 sec
Cautions: 5 for 20 laps
Lead changes: 14 (6 drivers)
Weather: Clear, 61 °F, East 11 mph
