2008 Season Outlook
Roger Penske, with 2 Sprint Cup championships in the past 3 years, clearly is doing something right. His cars were consistently the fastest in the field on both qualifying day and race day, and many feel that Penske Racing has surpassed Hendrick Motorsports and Richard Childress Racing as the best team in the sport right now. But with the Cup Series moving to the Car of Tomorrow, those super fast Dodge Chargers are obsolete....well, except for the Nationwide Series. That fleet of cars is being converted this winter into Nationwide Series Dodge Chargers, so the 5 drivers that will split 22 races in the #12 Dodge in NNS will have the best cars in the field. The main drivers will be developmental drivers Sam Hornish Jr. and Peyton Sellers. Hornish Jr. will run in 11 races as he continues to learn stock cars after years of IndyCar racing, and Sellers will run 5 races after impressing with top 5 points finishes the past 2 season in the K&N West and East Series. Joining those two are the three Cup drivers for a limited schedule. Casey Mears, Travis Kvapil, and Ryan Newman each will have two chances to pick up a trophy for Roger Penske - and Penske has even said that the goal is checkers or wreckers for these three. Newman has dominated the Nationwide Series in his time, and Mears and Kvapil obviously are talented based on Cup results, so this #12 team should be extremely strong with those 3 behind the wheel. What remains to be seen is how well crew chief Matt Gimbel can coax Hornish Jr. and Sellers to perform with a lack of experience.
