2008 Season Outlook
Meet Junie Donlavey 2.0: Mike Dillon. The son-in-law of Richard Childress and former GM of RCR leaves the organization after 2007 to start his own single-car team, Mike Dillon Racing, which will field 8 different drivers. Some are up-and-comers, while others are getting their second chance, but the goal is the same: to give a driver an opportunity. The team will get secondhand equipment from RCR, with the exception of the 6 races that Austin Dillon will drive, as he is an RCR development driver. Joining Dillon for 5 races apiece are J.R. Norris, Chad Chaffin, and Chase Pistone. Norris ran 2 Truck races last season for Billy Ballew 3 strong years in the now-shuttered Southeast Series, including a championship in the series' final year of existence. Chaffin, meanwhile, has experience in all 3 major series, but struggled mightily in Cup and earned just 1 top 10 in 83 career NNS starts. He falls under the category of reclamation project. Pistone, meanwhile, has bounced around racing but landed firmly in the Pro Cup Series last season, earning 1 win and 5 top 10s in 14 starts on his way to a 4th place points finish. Running in the #34 for 4 races each are Justin Labonte, Aaron Fike, and Shane Sieg. Labonte is another reclamation project, having fallen off the NASCAR map following a disappointing full-time season following a surprising fuel-mileage victory in 2004. Fike is also getting a second chance, though his opportunity comes after having been suspended for a heroin addiction. He's cleaned himself up, and will get another opportunity with MDR. Sieg is another long-time journeyman, with a decent amount of experience in Trucks with marginal success. Rounding out the lineup is a dirt-track convert, Jimmy Phelps, who'll get 3 races to acclimate himself to stock car racing on pavement. Overall, the team is a mishmash of drivers and has a mishmash of funding. With decent equipment though, it's not as if this team will be a backmarker. In the races Austin Dillon isn't running, expect the 34 to be a mid-pack team.
