After a bit of a disappointing race at Talladega, drivers and teams traveled back up the east coast to one of NASCAR's most legendary tracks, Darlington for the annual Southern 500 as the Chase for the Cup field is starting to look clearer and clearer while other drivers are fighting hard to make a disappointing year into one of glory.
For the third straight week, Curtis Key, owner of The Motorsports Group, is entered this week with Steve Park driving his #40 entry but for the first time there will be a second entry that will be attempting to make the field. Former Busch Series and Truck series champion Johnny Benson Jr. was contacted earlier in the week and has been tapped to drive the #46 for it's first attempt of a race in the cup series.*It feels good to be back in the Cup Series." Benson said in a interview on NASCAR.com. It is widely known that secondary cars entered by TMG are used for start and parks, so don't be surprised if Benson pulls behind the wall within the first five laps.
After a well deserved win at Talladega, Kyle Busch and his KBM(Kyle Busch Motorsports) team heads to Darlington on cloud nine after leading all but thirty laps that gave Kyle his second win of 2012 but also gave him a strong chance into locking himself into the Chase for the Cup even after only ten events have been completed. "It felt good to get that first win for my team after a few weeks of bad finishes." Kyle said in a interview. "This week after a couple of fans had been asking for it, my team has decided to team back up with and run the scheme we raced with at Richmond, the My Little Pony scheme, hopefully we can have a better result this time around."
One week after making their return to the Cup Series for the first time since 2009, Yates Racing will be looking to make another solid run at Darlington, the site where they have multiple wins at this track but none since Dale Jarrett won back in 2001. "This track is like me in a way." Robert Yates said while his car ran around the track. "We are both old, the fans and drivers respect us and we both can supply surprise winners when you least expect it." After his team finished a respectable 14th, Leffler will once again pilot the famous #28 car but last week sponsor Ask.com is not on the car and Yates had to dip into his own pockets and sponsor the car.
One team that is in desperate needs of staying alive is Robby Gordon Motorsports. Coming into 2012, Robby Gordon was scheduled to compete in all 36 races and hope for possibly a Top 30 in points however plans soon changed as new teams joined the series, Robby was finding it trouble to even make the field, his last race coming back at Martinsville where he dodged all the wrecks to finish 16th. Currently Robby is in 39th in Driver Points but in Owner Points he sits in 42nd, 60 points behind the valued 36th position to be locked into the field. "This year has been a struggle no doubt." Robby said as his car was unloaded from the hauler. "But I've never given up and the strength of this team is amazing and we will keep going until there is nothing left to give." Robby's struggling one car team has been rumored to be possibly entering a second car to help with funds for his main car in upcoming events.
Here is the betting odds for the Bojangles' Southern 500:

Jeff Gordon:4-1
Kyle Busch:4-1
Tony Stewart:3-1
Denny Hamlin:3-1
