Ok so I went to Michigan International Speedway 1 1/2 weeks ago, and this was my 8th race that I've gone to for MIS, and 9th total. (I went to Kentucky last year) I went for the whole weekend with the pit and paddock pass. Just for some background info, I collect autographs on a NASCAR Racing flag, and coming into the weekend I had about 70 autographs on it between drivers in all 3 series, TV reporters, and Miss Sprint Cup and Miss Coors Light. On Friday, my dad and I arrived late to MIS from car issues, so I went shopping at the vendors by the parking lot, not at the haulers which are extremely overpriced. One thing I got was: Jeff Gordon's Pure Michigan 400 Win Car. I went to that race, and Jeff Gordon is my favorite driver, and it was the first time I've ever saw him win in person. Anyways, I also got Clint Bowyer's 2005 #2 ACDelco 1:64, Jeff Gordon's 2015 3M Chevy 1:64, Jamie McMurray 2007 Pepsi 400 raced win 1:64, David Reutimann 2011 Tums 1:64, along with a Michigan International Speedway and Quicken Loans 400 pin. So, now for the weekend. I brought a bumch of hero cards, a Chevy hat, my flag, the 2011 Heluva Good! 400 at MIS program, and 3 diecasts (Jeff Gordon Chevy 300th Win (Bristol), Clint Bowyer 2013 Peak, and Jimmie Johnson 2004 Lowe's). So I got to the paddock area around 2:20, so I learned that I missed Steve Letarte signing down the paddock area "wall", outside the garage area. I was disappointed because he is my 2nd favorite former or current crew chief, behind Ray Everham. So anyways, I wait around, and 5 minutes later Justin Allgaier comes out of his motor home and signs autographs before going to the garage area. Since I had him on my flag, I got his autograph on my Team Chevy hat and at his spot in the 2011 Nationwide series program. coming into this weekend, I only needed 10 drivers autographs to get the complete Cup series field that was attempting to qualify on my flag. The drivers I needed were: Jamie McMurray, Kevin Harvick, Kasey Kahne, Sam Hornish Jr., Tony Stewart, Kyle Busch, Mike Bliss, Brett Moffitt, Matt DiBenedetto, and Dale Earnhardt Jr. Back to what happened during the weekend, Martin Truex Jr then started signing so I got him on my Chevy hat but stupidly forgot to get him on my 2011 program. So before qualifying, I heard that Jeff Gordon was signing by pit road, so I sprinted over there with my diecast, and unfortunately I was too far back to stretch my arm over to get the diecast near Gordon, but someone who was extremely nice took the diecast and got it signed for me, and I may have been on a TV camera, because there was a TV camera focused around where Jeff was signing, and I may have been in the background. After qualifying, despite the fact that he didn't make the field, Brendan Gaughan came over and signed some autographs for some of us fans. Keep Gaughan in mind, this isn't the only time I will run into Gaughan that weekend. After Gaughan signed, Dale Jr walked by, and we called for him to sign, but he pointed down towards the garage area. I followed him along the fence, seeing if he would sign, and then when he got to the wall in between the garage area and motor homes, he started signing! I got his autograph after four years of trying, and it was a correct assumption to say I was on cloud nine afterwards. Then, my day just kept getting better as KYLE BUSCH started signing autographs on that wall! Following Busch, Matt DiBenedetto was signing autographs as well, so three of the ten drivers I wanted signed all on one day. AT that point, I thought my day couldn't get better. I was wrong, as Roger Curtis, the president of MIS, started signing autographs and handing out garage tour passes to teens! I got one, and almost right after Curtis left, Jeff Gordon came and started signing autographs! I got his autograph on a few hero cards, as I has his autograph on everything else I had between the previous two years he signed autographs and at qualifying. Unfortunately I bought the 2014 Pure Michigan 400 car on Saturday, so I couldn't get it signed. Then, I waited around for about two hours to see if Tony Stewart would come and sign, but he never showed up, but Jamie McMurray and Kasey Kahne just walked by. I was a bit disappointed, but that disappointment quickly went away as Chad Knaus and Bootie Barker signed for the faithful 10 fans that stayed out that long. I left after that, and on that day here are the autographs I didn't mention I got, to try to condense this a bit. Jeb Burton, Carl Edwards, Trevor Bayne, Jack Roush, Kyle Larson, Cole Whitt (my second favorite driver, met him at BK Racing's shop last year), and Greg Biffle all signed as well. On Saturday, I woke up early because I was so excited for the garage tour. Once my dad and I got to MIS, we went to the Welcome Center to get my wristband, as the tour was for teens only. On the garage tour, we got to watch how Goodyear tires are assembled on to the rims, and installing the inner liner. After that, we walked by the inspection area. Our tour guide said that he would've let us go in the tent for inspection, but since it had rained that morning all the equipment was in the tent so there wouldn't be enough room for us to fit in there. After that, we walked out to behind the pit wall and watched 10 minutes of Sprint Cup practice. I've gone to MIS every year since 2007 (excluding 2010), and it looked so different from the pits than in the stands or even in the paddock area. On our way back, I saw a couple XFinity drivers by their haulers. Unfortunately, I saw my favorite driver, Ryan Sieg, but he was talking to his crew, so he didn't sign autographs. Then, we walked to none other than Brendan Gaughan's hauler and he came out and signed autographs and took photos with us. After I got a picture and a signed hero card that he was handing out, (they were handing out a lot of hero cards in the garage area) I saw Jeff Green walking back to his hauler. I called out to ask for an autograph, but he didn't hear me call out so went by. After that, Gaughan's teammate Brian Scott came by and started signing autographs. Finally, after that, Eric McClure came by and signed autographs. For the second straight year, someone walked off with my sharpie! Last year, Chip Ganassi walked off with one of my black sharpies, but this year, McClure walked off with my only silver sharpie. Fortunately, I didn't need it the rest of the day. Before the XFinity series race, the drivers went to the driver's meeting, and I got Ryan Sieg, C.J. Faison, Ryan Reed, Chris Buescher, a couple others, and, wait for it, Brendan Gaughan's- again! Anyways, I also got Martin Roy's and Carl Long's autograph after the meeting was over. I didn't get any other autographs that day, and I went to watch the XFinity series race after most of the drivers I needed walked back to their motorhomes without signing. On Sunday, in between rain storms, I went to an alternate path to get to the driver's meeting, and that paid off as I got Kasey Kahne's and Joe Gibb's autograph. Then I went to watch the Sprint Cup Series race, and after those 4 rain delays, there was a nice 80 lap segment with no rain, but then the caution flew, and Carl Edwards and Kyle Larson stayed out, the Edwards came in, the green flag flew..... for I think 7 laps, and Larson came in to pit five laps before Mother Nature triumphed at MIS. This was definitely up there as one of my favorite weekends at MIS. Thanks for reading, if you have any questions or comments, feel free to comment!
