Day Enterprise Racing to join Honda in '09 Honda Performance Development announced today that part-time, single-car operation Day Enterprises Racing has the distinction of becoming the first NASCAR organization to finalize a contract to field a Honda Accord in the 2009 NASCAR season. The announcement of Honda switching to NASCAR was made yesterday, and team owner Wayne Day quickly got on the phone with Honda officials to hammer out a deal and gain much-needed publicity for his low-budget operation. The team has funding from 31-W Insulation for 20 races in 2008, and Day said in a teleconference with reporters that he has 5 drivers signed for 2008 and each will get 4 races to prove themselves worthy of becoming to sole driver in 2009. "Brett [Rowe] and I renegotiated his contract and he will only be signed for next year rather than through 2009, and Justin [Ashburn] will also be back again next season," said Day. "In addition, Shawna Robinson, Johnny Bourneman, and Jeremy Clements will all be with us next season as we determine the best package for when we switch to Hondas. They're gonna give us a lot more support than Chevy is giving us right now, so I don't really care what some of the fans think". Day referenced the outcry of some NASCAR fans at yet another foreign-based manufacturer joining the top level of the sport, as Toyota is currently in its first year of Cup Series competition. Honda officials confirmed that DER would be receiving funding and equipment from HPD, but declined to comment on negotiations with any other teams. DER will continue to field Chevrolet Impalas through the 2008 season. (NASCAR.com) (4/12/07)
