Drivers took to the track on Sunday morning to run the first of the scheduled practice sessions. The track will be open for drivers in five one-hour intervals from Sunday to Thursday, prior to the '500' which will be held on Friday. Raul Boesel recorded a lap of 50.247, which was the fastest of the session but well off of any speed record. The drivers shown below recorded the top ten fastest laps.

Teammates Phil Threshie and Al Unser tangled coming out of turn two and stopped in the middle of the track. Arie Luyendyk was unable to avoid them and ended up upside down. He was alright, and the #54 team brought out a backup for the final moments of the session.

Speeds were down on Wednesday as Kevin Cogan recorded the fastest lap, a 50.621. Both drivers were alright and continued the practice session in backup cars. Teo Fabi in the #04 was also involved.

Teo Fabi won the 1987 Indy 500 after inheriting the lead on a late race restart. Hurley Haywood, who led the most laps (75), finished in 3rd place. Contenders Tom Gloy and Steve Kinser were both afflicted by mechanical issues an finished multiple laps down. The team MT Tank put 3 of its 4 drivers in the top 10, an Indy record. Rookie Davy Jones (black/neon blue car in first clip) suffered a broken wrist and a concussion in his lap 14 crash. He will be sidelined for two races and Josele Garza has been slotted as the replacement. Teo Fabi crossing the finish line for his first Indy 500 victory
