Burton not returning to RCR in 2008 This Friday at Texas Motor Speedway, Jeff Burton told reporters that he has been informed by Richard Childress to look elsewhere for a ride for the 2008 season. "It wasn't a mean thing or anything, I know you guys wish it was so y'all would have somethin' to write about", said the veteran Cup Series driver. "Richard called me up and said, hey, I'm sorry bud, but we simply don't have room for you next year. I'm not sore or anything, and I'm still gonna go out and do my best to win this championship this year. There's no change in how I'm gonna act around the guys at the shop, nothin' there at all. Sorry to disappoint y'all." Childress did not comment on the situation, saying he leaves things up to his PR department about when to make announcements official, and that he won't comment on Burton's quotes. Burton currently ranks 13th in the standings with 2 top 10 finishes in 6 races. He joined RCR in the middle of the 2004 season, earning 11 top 15 finishes in just 14 races. Since then, Burton has posted stellar results. He ranked 4th in 2005 with 2 wins, 6 top 5s, and 16 top 10s, and improved to 3rd last season with a series-high 6 victories, 13 top 5s, 20 top 10s, and 2 pole awards. Hendrick Motorsports and Burton's former team, Roush Racing are expected to aggressively pursue Burton, as he joins Carl Edwards and Kyle Busch as top-tier free agents for the 2008 season.
