After an intense race at Darlington, the Sprint Cup drivers headed to Charlotte for a special event known simply as the All-Star race. However before that happened a special qualifying event was held before the main event, a 40 lap race where the first two finishers will race in the All Star Race as well as a special fan vote. NASCAR came into the event with news that they had expanded the field and a total of 36 drivers would race and attempt their way into the All-Star Race as well as all former All-Star Race winners who are still alive are eligible and will automatically race in the main event so drivers like Geoffrey Bodine, Bill Elliott, Terry Labonte and Michael Waltrip will already be in the event.
