Junior to drive #3 in Cup Series next season
The NASCAR world read articles, heard radio headlines, and watched TV reports with a collective gasp this afternoon. The #3 is coming back to the NASCAR Cup Series. Previously made famous by the late, 7-time champion Dale Earnhardt Sr., his son, Dale Earnhardt Jr., will leave Dale Earnhardt Incorporated to return the #3 Goodwrench Chevy to the Cup Series. "This is a tremendously historic day for me, the Earnhardt family, and the sport as a whole," said team owner Richard Childress, through tears. "Bringing the #3 back with sponsorship from Goodwrench will bring fans back to the sport that departed following my good friend Dale's death and attract new ones. I've always looked at Dale Jr. as a good friend in addition to a very capable driver, and I know he will do excellent in the role and I am already excited for next season. We know the media attention about this announcement is going to be immense, but Dale has raced his entire career under pressure and I feel his results will only get better with RCR equipment under the hood." Childress would not elaborate on whether or not the classic black paint scheme would be returned, but Earnhardt Jr. voiced his opinion on the matter. "I personally wanna help design it. I think a little variation from the old scheme would be good since we're switching to this new car next season but I'd prefer the whole overall flow to stay kinda the same as it used to be. I don't know really, I just think it'd be nice for a little bit of variation." The addition of the #3 will expand the RCR Cup Series organization once again, moving from 4 cars this season to 5 cars next season. While Jeff Burton won't be returning to the #31, the seat will still be filled and a new sponsor is expected to be named. (ESPN.com) (4/17/07)
