The CART series traveled to Phoenix, Arizona for the first race of the 1988 season. Former champion and Indy 500 winner Danny Onagis showed the way in practice and qualifying, recording the fastest speed in every session. Ongais started the race off well as he jumped out to a five second lead in the first few laps. Coming out of the first turn, first lap, pre-season favorite Steve Kinser had a mechanical failure and stopped on the apron. No caution was called and he was safely towed back to pit road. The only caution of the race came on lap 28, when Herm Johnson broke a piston and stopped on track. Onagis had led the entire race until he was challenged by Hurley Haywood. Haywood made up a 10 second gap between him and the leader without any help of a caution or lap car. By lap 80, Haywood and Onagis were nose to tail and they stayed that way for around 10 laps. Onagis lost the lead on lap 96, and would be relegated to a 2nd place finish after dominating the weekend. Haywood claimed his first win of the 1988 season as Pontiac driver Rich Vogler claimed the first podium finish of his career in 3rd. Below is a picture of Haywood (yellow car) weaving through lap traffic during the middle stages of the race.

Hey frow, how many of these CART carsets do you have? And more significantly, where did you find them all? Or did you paint them yourself?

Hey frow, how many of these CART carsets do you have? And more significantly, where did you find them all? Or did you paint them yourself? I have 7 seasons worth of them so far. All the cars were painted by me and all of them are fictional, no correlation to real life schemes except the drivers that are in the cars.

This is cool I kindof wanted to do an F1 league too but I don't want to hog all of the series so no one else can do them so I'm glad someone is doing it.

CART traveled to Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin and beutiful Road America for race 2 of the season. Tom Klausner put his #19 MTV Ford on the pole and would lead the first four laps before being passed by Teo Fabi. Fabi had the fastest car of the weekend and proved it by leading 44 of the total 50 laps. Rookie John Andretti led the remaining 2 laps during green flag pit stops and went on to record a career-best 4th place finish. A number of contenders were forced to pit late due to poor fuel strategy including Rich Vogler, Chris Kneifel, and Roberto Moreno. Teo Fabi came away with his first win of 1988, followed by Danny Ongais in 2nd and Phoenix winner Hurley Haywood in 3rd. Klausner was relegated to a last-place finish after slamming into the pit wall repeatedly, a phenomena commonly seen at the Road America course.

The series traveled to Indianapolis, Indiana for the famous Indy 500 on 12/12. Many drivers rolled out with strong cars, but none were stronger than the #04 of Teo Fabi and #64 Hurley Haywood. Haywood put his Union Pacific Ford on the pole with a speed of 49.038, closely followed by former winners Fabi and Ongais. The first 75 laps were 'event-free', with Fabi and Haywood swapping the lead as they ran 10 seconds ahead of third place. A caution bunched the field up on lap 73 after two rookies, Dale Coyne and Tero Palmroth, collided in turn 3. The yellow flew again 10 laps later for a huge accident involving Rich Vogler, Al Unser Jr., Davy Jones, and several others. Vogler and Unser's cars hooked together in turn 1, made heavy contact with the wall, then came back onto racing groove where they were hit by a large pack of cars. On the resulting pit stops, Fabi and Haywood made contact on pit road, forcing Haywood to remove his rear wing due to extensive damage. The race saw a rash of yellow flags from that point on, including a massive flip by Jacques Villeneuve on lap 104. Following a brief green flag run, Teo Fabi attempted to go three-wide on the backstretch but did not have enough clearence. Fabi's #04 Pontiac slid down into #3 car of Fabrizio Barbazza and also collected Hurley Haywood. The two biggest contenders were eliminated in this wreck, allowing 1984 Indy winner Steve Kinser and reigning series champion Chris Kneifel to battle for the win. Slow green flag pit stops knocked Kinser out of the lead, but he was able to close a three second gap form Kneifel in roughly 20 laps. Kinser was widening the gap and seemed to have the race in the bag when he encountered a pack of lap cars on lap 199/200. This enabled Kneifel to close the gap within a half-second, although Kinser was able to navigate through the traffic en route to his second '500' win. Kneifel finished 2nd for the second year in a row, while Mel Kenyon, Tom Gloy, and Arie Luyendyk completed the top 5.

Race 4 of the CART series was held in beautiful Milwaukee, Wisconsin where 33 drivers competed for the win in the cheese state. Teo Fabi put his Pontiac on the pole with a blistering time of 123.5 and was looking for his 2nd win of the year. However, Tom Gloy quickly established himself at the front and went on to lead the first half of the race, nearly lapping the field by lap 120. Following a caution for a Herm Johnson spin, Tom Gloy won the race off pit road followed by the brightly colored #19 of Tom Klausner. Gloy lagged behind visibly on the restart and was forced to bring his car to pit road following an unknown mechanical problem. This opened the door to Klausner, who went on to record his first win of the 1988 campaign. Indy 500 winner Steve Kinser passed Danny Onagis for second on the final lap, relegating Onagis to a third place finish. Rookie John Andretti and Jack Fadden completed the top 5.

The CART series went to Oregon for the first time in series history for race 5. Portland Raceway was the host for an exciting G.I. Joe/ Budweiser 200, full of wrecks and excitement. Teo Fabi claimed yet another pole, which counts for a point in the standings, and was accomponied by Tom Gloy on the front row. The race saw it's first caution on lap 4 when Steve Kinser lost an engine on the backstretch. A rash of wrecks followed this caution, highlighted by the #01 of Danny Ongais wrecking 2 lap cars on two different occasions. Tom Gloy yet again established himself as the best car, leading his 37 of 103 laps in the middle portion of the race. He was foiled by a poor adjustment on the final stop and was relegated to a fifth place finish. However, the battle for the lead was intense from lap 80 to the final lap. Defending champ Chris Kneifel was under heavy pressure from Pontiac driver Rich Vogler, who had more horses under the hood but was not as skilled a wheelman as Kneifel. The two cars ran within a second of each other until a lap car impeded Kneifel, allowing Vogler to make a pass. Vogler held on the next 10 laps and his win was cemented when Danny Onagis wrecked another lap car on lap 100. As the cars paraded behind the pace car to take the checker, Rich Vogler brought home his first win as the entire #77 Twinkies team went crazy on pit road. Kneifel finished second, followed by Danny Onagis the lap car killer. John Andretti, driver of the #18 Miller High Life Chevy, currently leads ROTY honors by a sizable margin over fellow rookie Dominic Dobson.
