One week after the non-points All-Star weekend, drivers get back to work on the 2012 season with the first trip to the famed Charlotte Motor Speedway as the championship race is getting hotter by the week and here are a few highlights before the event.
At Darlington James Finch, owner of the team Phoenix Racing, tabbed Bill Elliott to drive his secondary car and Elliott preformed well by finishing in 10th spot. However Elliott will not be in the car this week as he has chosen to spend time teaching his son Chase Elliott as his son begins to climb the ranks in racing. With Elliott not in Charlotte, Finch has tapped the winner of the 1991 fall event at Charlotte, Geoffrey Bodine, as his driver for this event. With the #09 car sitting 43rd in owner points, a good finish by Bodine could go a long way in a full time return for the secondary car.
One driver that is looking forward to Charlotte is Johnny Sauter, who scored an amazing win in the Sprint Showdown to advance to the All-Star Race and would go on to finish 10th in that event. However Sauter will have to do a lot more work, the #71 owned by the Sauter Family, has failed to qualify for the last two events, having only made their series debut at Richmond, finishing 27th. The car sits 55th in owner points, nearly 100 points behind 36th spot, so unless the team makes some races soon, this team might close it's doors before even making double digit starts.
Other noticeables:
Coming into this event, R3 Motorsports has only qualified for one event and failed to qualify for ten with their lone start being 25th at Talladega by Robert Richardson Jr.,
Robby Gordon who finished 14th at Darlington, has decided to skip this event and focus on Pocono, RGM plans to have a two car team at the event with a second driver yet to be announced
Here are the betting odds for the Coca-Cola 600:
Kasey Kahne:5-1
Jimmie Johnson:5-1
Kyle Busch-4-1
Jeff Gordon:4-1
Denny Hamlin:3-1
Greg Biffle:2-1
