McClure-Morgenthau closing up shop? While official entry lists have not been released yet by NASCAR for the Talladega weekend, sources inside NASCAR indicate that the famous #4 McClure-Morgenthau Chevy is not on the entry list and rumors are circulating that team employees have been laid off. The unnamed source told reporters that in an e-mail exchange with part owner Beth Ann Morgenthau it was said that the team is folding due to a lack of competitiveness, not a lack of funding. Craftsman has fully funded the #4 since February of 2006 and was slated to be on the hood for the remainder of the season, but driver Mike Wallace has failed to qualify for each of the past 3 races, having lost his spot in the top 35 in owner points. Eric McClure was also expected to attempt to qualify for the Aaron's 499 in the #04 Hefty Chevy, but is reportedly no longer under contract with the organization and is looking for a ride for next season. The team that dominated at Daytona in the mid 1990s has fallen on hard times in the past 3 years, having been forced to merge with Morgenthau's #49 team simply to stay alive for this season, but it appears to have fallen too far.
