Hamilton Jr. signs with Haas Haas CNC Racing owner Gene Haas announced today that Bobby Hamilton Jr. has signed a 2-year deal to drive the team's #0 Chevy in the NASCAR Nextel Cup Series. Hamilton Jr. will replace Mike Bliss, who has driven for the team since 2005 and earned the organization's first ever victory at Richmond International Raceway. Tempur-Pedic will serve as sponsor, marking the brand's initial foray into NASCAR. Haas did not say whether Bliss had left the team by choice or was forced out, but did acknowledge he was caught off guard when current sponsor Best Buy left the team for Evernham Motorsports. "I really thought we could build a long-term relationship with them but I guess they had other ideas. Fortunately, Tempur-Pedic came right in, and I'm glad that I'll be getting a free mattress in my home now". Hamilton Jr. ranks 23rd in the current point standings with 1 top 10 finish despite missing the Daytona 500 with his #34 Braun-Edwards Racing Toyota. "Joining Haas CNC is a very beneficial move for my career", said Hamilton Jr. "The results for this team have been steadily improving, and with new funding I think we can take it to the next level". Haas also indicated that his team may change numbers or change number styles, stating that the team's current number "leads to a lot of confusion with Michael Waltrip Racing's #00 team", which may be detrimental to marketing purposes.
