Allmendinger discusses future, Car of Tomorrow
Coming to Rockingham Speedway on a perfect Wednesday afternoon, we caught up with Bill Davis Racing in their first test with NASCAR's Car of Tomorrow. Spanning for nearly three hours, several crew members were at work tuning these machines, and three drivers took part of the afternoon activities.
We spent awhile doing an interview with AJ Allmendinger, who will drive the 23 in select events this season.
INT: "So, how are things with AJ? Any racing coming up for you?"
AA: "Well, not really. Right now, my schedule consists of some races for Chip Ganassi in the Busch Series, and coming up in what feels like forever, I'll be in the Bill Davis 23 at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve. I can't wait for that weekend!"
INT: "That's a first for NASCAR, isn't it?"
AA: "Yes, it is! I'm going to be on a much more level playing field that weekend, I feel like we can get this car into the show and definitely flex our muscles."
INT: "How about for next season? Anything you can announce?"
AA: "Unfortunately not. Neither Bill nor Chip has talked to me about next year."
INT: "Well, let's talk about today. What's up with this test?"
AA: "Bill called me this morning and said that there were two trucks on their way to Rockingham, and that if I wanted to test the 23, I was more than welcome to. Obviously, they've already got Johnny Benson and Mike Skinner here, but he wanted me to come down and test. Man, this car is just wicked fast. I don't know if it's just that this new BDR car is fast, or if it's the Car of Tomorrow as a whole, but man, I felt like I was in a rocket."
INT: "Did Bill Davis have a briefing for a specific goal for this test?"
AA "Yes, a very short one. He said that we should get as much information on this new car as possible. So, we ran alone for awhile, then I ran behind Mike Skinner for a little bit, to see how the car acts in dirty air. There's such a difference, and you can really tell, unlike open wheel cars. Also, it helps with getting me experience. When Mike was on track, Johnny was on my radio, talking to me and helping me out. He's a great mentor."
INT: "One last question, there's a new sponsor on the hood. Can you tell us more about that?"
AA: "Quite honestly, I have no idea about that. I got to the track, and this car was sitting in a garage stall, and they told me to get in it."
Bill Davis Racing fields two cars in the NASCAR Nextel Cup Series. Aric Almirola, driver of the 22, was not present. It is unknown who will be in the car for 2008. One team member said both paint schemes seen at the test were nothing more than test schemes.

OOC: Great job on this interview by thatoneshredder. He came up with the idea and sent me the script, and I think it's really unique and awesome. I'm going to try and do more silly season news that isn't necessarily "press release" type news.
