Welcome to mock 21st century NASCAR. I will begin with the 2000 season and hopefully progress further and further into the century. The season will be kicked off with the Bud Shootout but first the Bud Shootout Qualifier will be raced to see who will join the field of 14 pole sitters from 1999 in the shootout.

Bud Shootout Qualifier
Summary: Lap 1-Ricky Craven drew for pole and led the field to the green flag to unofficially kick off the 2000 NASCAR season. Jeff Burton wasted no time at all diving under Craven and outside pole sitter Jimmy Spencer making it three wide for the lead going into turn one. While Burton assumed the lead, Jimmy Spencer was able to clear Craven for second going into turn three. Lap 5-Miraculously, Terry Labonte moved from last on the grid to second. Labonte wouldn't stop there getting underneath Burton going down the backstretch and completing the pass. Lap 7-After 2 laps out in front of the field, Labonte lost the lead back to Burton who repeated Labonte's exact move on the backstretch. Lap 16-The field still being led by Jeff Burton caught the 48 car of Stanton Barrett who was well off the pace. This split the field into two significant packs of cars. Burton, Jimmy Spencer, Darrell Waltrip, Geoffrey Bodine, and Terry Labonte pulled away from positions the next six cars. The real loser in this situation was defending NASCAR champion Dale Jarrett who was battling for second just before the field caught Barrett. Lap 25-The four cars still directly behind Burton tried to generate some kind of run to get around the 99 but Burton was able to cruise into the Bud Shootout with Labonte coming home second right behind him.

Bud Shootout
Summary: Lap 1-An extremely thrilling Bud Shootout began shortly after the Qualifier finished. Mark Martin led a 15 car field to the green flag to begin the race. After giving Martin a huge push into turn one, Tony Stewart dove to the inside of Mark Martin going down the backstretch and took the lead. Lap 4-After the lead was changed three times in three laps, Jeff Burton, the Qualifier winner, found himself with an opportunity to take the lead after starting last. He got underneath Bobby Labonte exiting the tri oval and swooped past him to take the lead making it four lead changes in four laps. Lap 8-Bobby Labonte retook the lead from Rusty Wallace who had snatched the lead two laps earlier. Lap 15-Bobby Labonte's reign at the front of the field ended with Jeff Gordon making a thrilling move going three wide with Joe Nemechek and Labonte into turn three and coming out with the lead. Lap 18-After watching Gordon, Ward Burton, and Rusty Wallace swap the lead in consecutive laps, Mike Skinner got his chance to lead making an inside move on Wallace in turn one. Lap 22-Skinner was able to keep his lead for four laps until Ken Schrader, piloting his new #36 M&M's ride, found a way around the Lowe's machine with four laps to go. Lap 23-As had been the theme throughout the race, it was very hard to protect a lead. Ken Schrader learned that quickly by losing the lead to Tony Stewart exiting the tri oval. Ricky Rudd was then able to pounce on Stewart going down the backstretch. Lap 24-Bud Shootout Qualifier winner Jeff Burton took the lead from Rudd with two laps to go. He was attempting the first winner of both the Qualifier and the Shootout. But, drivers agreed that second was the place to be on the final lap of this race. Lap 25-Going into the last lap, the top five consisted of Jeff Burton, Jeff Gordon, Ward Burton, Ricky Rudd, and Rusty Wallace. Gordon dove underneath Burton going into turn one and Rusty Wallace made it three wide for second behind Gordon. Gordon looked like he would be in a good position to win but Burton cleared the rest of the pack for second and got an outstanding run on Gordon going down the backstretch. Gordon's efforts to block were in vain as Wallace shot around him and drove away to capture his second Bud Shootout victory. Behind him, Sterling Marlin was also able to get around the ailing 24 machine.
Results: 1. #2-Rusty Wallace (4 laps led) 2. #40-Sterling Marlin -0.15 sec 3. #24-Jeff Gordon (1 lap led) 4. #18-Bobby Labonte (8 laps led) 5. #22-Ward Burton (1 lap led) 6. #36-Ken Schrader (1 lap led) 7. #28-Ricky Rudd (2 laps led) 8. #16-Kevin Lepage 9. #6-Mark Martin 10. #33-Joe Nemechek 11. #99-Jeff Burton (3 laps led) 12. #20-Tony Stewart (1 lap led) 13. #42-Kenny Irwin Jr. 14. #31-Mike Skinner (4 laps led) 15. #34-David Green

The Great American Race is next. Who will conquer Daytona? Can Gordon become the fourth driver ever to go back to back? Will the master of Daytona, Dale Earnhardt, win his second 500? Can Dale Jarrett, Sterling Marlin, or Bill Elliott join an exclusive club of three drivers that have one three or more Daytona 500s? Will we see a familiar face finally achieve their Daytona glory? Or will we see a surprise winner, one that may emerge from the incredibly talented rookie class of 2000? We shall see.
