In a press conference held on Tuesday after the 2012 Toyota / Save Mart 350 at the Sonoma Raceway, Curtis Key, owner of The Motorsports Group, was forced to announce that lead driver Steve Park had been injured after a hard crash on Lap 12 in Turn 1.
Park was taken to a local hospital where it was found the driver had suffered a concussion. Park has had suffered injures in the past; in 1998 while practicing at Atlanta, Park suffered a broken leg, broken collarbone, broken shoulder blade, and two chipped front teeth and in 2001 Park suffered a massive brain injury as well as several broken ribs during the South Carolina 200 at Darlington Raceway.
Park is scheduled to miss the next two months of racing, with his return date scheduled for around the Watkins Glen event. Park is currently 34th in points, having not missed a single race since he was signed by Key and thanks to Park's good runs, Park had climbed the #40 entry into 37th in points in just eight events.
With Kentucky coming up, Key has announced that up and coming driver Matt DiBenedetto, who drives for Key in the NASCAR Nationwide Series, will replace Park in the #40 for the Kentucky event, but has not announced anything long term.
Jerry Nadeau has been announced as the spotter for DiBenedetto following a 4th place finish at Sonoma.
