After NASCAR's first stop at a road course in Sonoma, drivers arrived at the Kentucky Speedway for only the second time in series history
At Sonoma, Robby Gordon shocked the world by leading 42 of the 110 laps and scored his first win in eight years, as well as P.J Jones driving the second Robby Gordon Motorsports entry to a 5th place finish. However, due to the recession, RGM, has been forced to cut back their schedule for 2012, with the team deciding to skip the Kentucky event with their next scheduled race at New Hampshire in three weeks.
Finishing 4th at Sonoma was Jerry Nadeau, who proved he still had what it took to be a NASCAR driver. Choosing to not compete at Kentucky, Nadeau will instead be has been hired by Curtis Key to be the spotter for Matt DiBenedetto, who is filling in for the injured Steve Park, who suffered a concussion at Sonoma. As mentioned, DiBenedetto will be looking to make only his second career start after Park was injured and is scheduled to be out of the car till the Watkins Glen event.
Sonoma turned out to be a mixed bag for James Finch's Phoenix Racing team; Scott Pruett drove the second entry to a 15th place finish after leading 7 laps, while Kurt Busch, who led 6 laps early in the race, was knocked out in a late race crash and finished 24th. Busch still holds onto a wild card spot entering Kentucky while Finch has chosen rising talent Ryan Truex to make his series debut in the second entry.

Humphrey Smith Racing continues to struggle even getting into the field, as the team has attempted to qualify for seven races but has failed all seven,
