Leicht to run for Hendrick Hendrick Motorsports and Stephen Leicht announced today that the young Robert Yates Racing driver has signed a one-year pact with the NASCAR juggernaut to drive the #24 National Guard Chevy Monte Carlo SS in the Nationwide Series beginning in 2008. Leicht will be in the car for the first 20 races of the season, and his time in the car for the rest of the season will depend on whether or not the team deems his performance satisfactory. "This is a great day for me", said Leicht. "I had a good time with Yates and the #90 team but when I found out the team was closing I knew I had to find myself another ride in solid equipment and this team stood out above all the rest to me. I want to take some time to thank Mr. Hendrick for allowing me to have this opportunity too. It's easily the best chance I'll ever have to prove myself and I guarantee right now that I'll be in the top 10 in points next season". Reportedly, Leicht reached out to Hendrick without ever having contact with Yates aside from receiving notice of the closure of the Busch Series facet of the Ford team, but Leicht downplayed any controversy. "It's not a big deal at all. They told me they weren't gonna run a Busch team next year, so I said 'alright' and moved on. Yeah, they never told me directly to start looking elsewhere but it was kind of inferred in my opinion". Hendrick did not comment on the status of development driver Landon Cassill, who has hinted he would like to remain with Hendrick. (ESPN.com) (5/7/07)

Correction - Leicht is running in the #24 National Guard, not the #5 Lowe's. Original post has been updated.
