Jeff Gordon and Sterling Marlin lead the field to the green flag. As for Kenny Wallace, he goes immediately down pit road with a tire problem and retires from the race. Kenny Wallace does not complete a single lap in Steve Park's Pennzoil Chevrolet. The first few laps were incredible as a couple of drivers took turns at taking the lead. Some drivers would even grab the lead and then get shuffled out of line a few seconds after getting the lead. The green flag action lasted all the way until lap 7.

On Lap 7 of the Budweiser Shootout, Dale Jarrett was leading the pack into turn one. Behind Jarrett was a recipe for disaster as Bobby Labonte tried to squeeze through the middle of Stacy Compton, who was on Bobby's inside and Sterling Marlin, who was on Bobby's outside. Jimmy Spencer was trying to help his teammate Marlin on the top which nearly caused them to go four wide. With that, Labonte bounced off Marlin and then bounced off Compton back into Marlin triggering a big crash towards turn two. Multiple cars were collected as Jimmy Spencer went down the banking and scraped against Earnhardt Jr. and tagging Jeff Gordon in the process. Bobby Labonte's car was slammed by an onrushing Jeff Green which sent his Pontiac to spin like a top as many others piled into the crash.

After the clean up was completed, Dale Jarrett would lead the field to the restart on lap 11. The action soon began to pick up again as more drivers were challenging each other for the lead. On lap 19, the pack of cars would catch the slow car of Sterling Marlin and this would cause Dale Jarrett to fall out of the main pack along with Ken Schrader. The next caution would not come out until lap 32.

The caution comes out on lap 32 as Jimmy Spencer gets turned by #66 of Todd Bodine when approaching the start finish line. Spencer was another slow car riding around on the track. Jimmy Spencer ends up splitting up the lead pack and tries to fall back in line but ends up turning himself. Casey Atwood in the #19 car made some contact with Spencer's Target Dodge as he went back up the track. Jason Leffler was behind Atwood and was able to get his car slowed down to avoid being involved in the crash. Since the field was split up in multiple areas around the track, Ken Schrader and Dale Jarrett were racing to the line for position and end up crashing into a wrecked Casey Atwood. This took Schrader and Atwood out of the race. To make matters worse, Dale Jarrett was able to drive away to try and catch up to the end of the pacing line. In the process of doing so, Jarrett ends up slamming into the back of Dale Earnhardt Jr., who then gets pushed into the back of Bill Elliott causing significant damage to the rear of Elliott's car along with front and rear damage on Dale Jr.'s car. Both Jarrett and Earnhardt Jr. would not finish the race.

The final restart took place on lap 37 out of 40 setting up a 3 lap shootout to decide the winner. The top 10 were the only cars that were able to compete for the win as a few were left too damage to be racing for the win. Mark Martin had a strong car all day and was the one to lead the field to the final restart. All the drivers in the top 10 gave it their best shot to try to win and rookie Ryan Newman came out on top as he inched ahead of Geoffrey Bodine at the line.

- Charter System Established: A new charter system has been put in place for the 2002 NASCAR Winston Cup Season. Any team that finished in positions 1-35 on the owner points standings will be locked into every race. Any team that finished outside the top 35 in owner points or have established a new team, will have to qualify for the final 7 open spots. For the Gatorade Twin 125's, drivers on the entry list with the "*" next to their name will have to race their way into the Daytona 500 by being the highest placing car that does not have a charter. The amount of cars without charters that can advance from the qualifying races to the Daytona 500 depends on the total amount of chartered cars that enter. As all 35 have entered the Daytona 500, Twin 125 race 1 will have a 27 car field which will allow 4 non-chartered cars to make 4 out of the 7 remaining spots while in race 2, only 3 cars with no charter can make it since the lineup is smaller than the first race.
- Dwayne Leik Withdraws From Entry List: Dwayne Leik, driver of the #72 Realtree Camouflage Chevrolet for Marcis Auto Racing has decided to withdraw from the Daytona entry list. The team's plan was to have Leik drive Marcis' backup car as a second entry to try and make the Daytona 500. With that, the team decided to save the car if it would be needed for Marcis if he was to make the Daytona 500. Dwayne Leik also noted that he will focus on with his PR role for Marcis Auto Racing as Dave Marcis is looking to start his 33rd and final Daytona 500 start as he will hang up the helmet for retirement.
- Jimmie Johnson and Kevin Harvick on the Front Row: Rookie Jimmie Johnson and Kevin Harvick will lead the field to the green flag in the Daytona 500. Johnson's #48 Lowe's Chevrolet won the pole in Daytona single-car qualifying and is now locked into the Daytona 500 after becoming a full time team for Hendrick Motorsports. Kevin Harvick returns to the #29 GM Goodwrench Chevrolet for Richard Childress this season. Harvick will compete in his first Daytona 500 after taking over for Dale Earnhardt.
- Kenny Wallace in the #1 car for Dale Earnhardt Inc.: Kenny Wallace will remain in the #1 Pennzoil Chevrolet for now as a substitute driver for the injured Steve Park. Steve Park has not received medical clearance to race yet from his injuries that he sustained in a Busch Grand National Series race last season at Darlington Raceway.

Rookie Jimmie Johnson and car owner/teammate Jeff Gordon lead the field to the green flag for the first Gatorade Twin 125 Qualifier. After lap 1, the field was bunched together going after the lead. Johnson was quickly shuffled out of line which did not matter to him since he was on the pole for the Daytona 500. The only problem that Johnson could face would be to get involved in a crash and have to resort to a backup car. By around lap 10, some of the underdogs started to make their way to the front such as Mike Wallace and Brett Bodine. Rick Mast was the first non-chartered car to take the lead, followed by another which was Kyle Petty. The green flag action would continue on until lap 26.
