On lap 26, the first caution came out for a four car accident. Just a few feet past the start/finish line, Mark Martin cut down across the nose of Joe Nemechek and sent Martin sliding up the track clipping the #85 of Carl Long and making some contact with his teammate, Matt Kenseth. Mike Wallace was able to slow down enough to avoid Kenseth and Martin. Carl Long was able to hang on to his car after being slightly clipped by Mark Martin. Luckily the wreck took place in the very back of the pack so no one else was caught up in the wreck.

While under caution, Matt Kenseth's right damage would get the better of him and cause him to run into the back of Mike Wallace. Matt Kenseth's day would be over for that mishap. Mike Wallace and Mark Martin would continue but would ride around for the rest of the race. Pit stops would soon begin and Hut Stricklin, Geoffrey Bodine, and Ryan Newman decide to stay out to possibly try and stretch their fuel and tires to gain position while everyone else ducks down pit road. After the first major cycle of pit stops, Kurt Busch would come back down pit road to get an adjustment. He is followed by Carl Long who ends up losing a motor and has to retire from the race. This would ultimately end Carl Long's chances of making the Daytona 500.

The restart would occur on lap 30 out of 50. Hut Stricklin would lead the field to the final restart. Hut Stricklin, Ryan Newman, Geoffrey Bodine and a few others such as Jeff Gordon would come down pit road again incase of another caution. With this happening, the pack would soon spread out again.

Soon the white flag would come into view and Kyle Petty would lead the lead pack to it. Ward Burton was able to catch a draft on Kyle Petty entering turn 1 and was able to take the lead. Jeff Gordon was a lap down from pitting and separated Ward Burton and Ricky Rudd who was running second. Ward Burton would end up winning race 1.

The first caution on lap 5 of the race was for a multicar pile-up that started when Kenny Wallace in the #1 car cleared himself and got turned off of the nose of Tony Stewart in the #20 car. Wallace and Stewart would slide back up the track and into the path of Jeff Green and Jerry Nadeau. Jeff Green's right front would absolutely slam the outside wall a ton as Stewart's car would pin it against the wall after the impact. Jerry Nadeau would hit Kenny Wallace and would be collected in the crash. Todd Bodine would be partially clipped by Kenny Wallace which would result in him brushing against the wall and then colliding with Robby Gordon, who had avoided making contact with the #1, #20, #30, and #25. Kevin Harvick and Hermie Sadler would miss the crash. Jeff Green was shaken up from the impact, but was ok after the crash along with the others. Jeff Green would ultimately fail to qualify for the Daytona 500 as the #30 car was an open car. Two damaged cars has left Richard Childress in a serious predicament.

Under caution, the #59 car of Bobby Gerhart would bring his car down into the pits with engine trouble. His car would smoke all the way to the car's pit box. The engine problem was diagnosed to be a header issue and Gerhart would be done for the day. Bobby Gerhart would fail to qualify for the Daytona 500.

To everyone's surprise, Norm Benning had won the race back to the line when the caution came out. With that, Norm would ultimately lead the field to the restart on lap 10 and would go on to lead the most amount of laps!
