That's right, I have returned!

Not by choice, mind you. Trying to find a place for my mock seasons has been hard, as of late. First, MattyO on SRD relapsed into his irrational prejudice against mock seasons again, and later shut down SRD entirely.

Then I moved to Stunod Racing, but after my usual stretch of laziness, they saw fit to outright delete the thread.

Well, now I'm back. The reboot I mentioned in my last thread has gone ahead, but has been merged with an alternate history project called Start Your Engines!.

The full details of this timeline can be found here, but here's a cliffnotes version:

* Pacific Coast Racing from my previous timeline has been ported over, but now, instead of starting as a Chevy team in 1969, it's now the oldest team in NASCAR, having run in the first Modified Division race in 1948 and now running across all of the major series (and ARCA)
* Chrysler will return in 1988 with the LeBaron; the initial drivers will be #80 Tim Johnson (Andy's new name), #86 Ryan Kelman, #43 Richard Petty, #30 Michael Waltrip, #44 Sterling Marlin, #55 Phil Parsons, #83 Lake Speed, #90 Ken Schrader (he's still in the #90 because Tim Richmond won't have AIDS), and #52 Jimmy Means
* Midweek races will be reintroduced in 1991
* Many things stay the same: no playoffs, no Car of Tomorrow, no bullshit rules, and no getting rid of Rockingham or North Wilkesboro

Miller American 400

In the Irish Hills of Michigan lies one of the fastest superspeedways on the NASCAR schedule. Michigan International Speedway is indeed fast, but not fast enough to warrant having to find some way to slow the cars down.

Points Update

Dennis Malone is the new points leader, after Terry Labonte finished off the lead lap. He has an uncomfortable lead of only five points.

Next Time

Uncertainty and fear hang over the next race: the Pepsi Firecracker 400. The first superspeedway race since the Winston 500 has many questions surrounding it, the biggest being: will another car go into the catchfence, and if so, will it go into the stands and kill spectators? NASCAR has mandated smaller carburetors for the remaining two superspeedway races of 1987, and will have a definitive solution in 1988, the current rumor being the reintroduction of restrictor plates.

Anyway, I know I haven't run a race in NR2003 since...2021, but I'm here to tell you that I'm ready to get back into it.

However, the game has changed, and going forward, things will be different.

At the 1987 Pepsi Firecracker 400, Dennis Malone switched to a new car. However, as I have found it, NR2003's season mode standings count each individual carfile as a separate car, regardless of if two cars have the same driver. Also, 1987 was always meant to be a prologue season.

Here's what has happened: I skimmed through the rest of 1987 by running all of the remaining races on accelerated time, and for 1988-onward, I will run each race individually, then plug the results into Score4.

And now, let's look at the results for the entire season. Keep in mind: things get VERY interesting.

Next season...

The 1988 season will see much in the way of change. One of the most promising rookie classes in years will take to the track, including Ryan Kelman, Melvin Kennedy, and the one everyone is watching, third-generation Pacific Coast Racing driver Tim Johnson.

The number of manufacturers in NASCAR will also go from five to six, as Chrysler makes its return, fielding the Chrysler LeBaron. In 1988, the full-time Chrysler teams will be:

The schedule will expand from 29 races to 31, as the new Coca-Cola Superspeedway in Denver, CO makes its debut with two dates.

In terms of technical changes, Pontiac is debuting a new body for the Grand Prix, Buick and Oldsmobile have gone back to the Regal and Cutlass, respectively, and restrictor plates will now be mandatory at Daytona, Talladega, and Coca-Cola.

1988 promises to be a season to remember, so keep it here! The season will start once I get Grant Adcox's car from a friend (he will drive the #24 Tab Chrysler; Tab as in the diet soda).
