Edwards to Hendrick in '08
Big news came out of the Hendrick Motorsports building this morning. Team owner Rick Hendrick announced a surprising deal with Carl Edwards to drive the #5 Kellogg's Chevy Impala in the 2008 and 2009 Sprint Cup Series seasons. The surprising aspect of the deal is that the team managed to keep such a mega-deal under wraps until the official announcement - a rare occurrence in the fast-paced technology era where secrets are impossible to keep. Edwards will also bring sponsorship from Under Armour, which will serve as primary sponsor for 8 races in both 2008 and 2009. In addition, Edwards will pilot the #5 Lowe's Chevy Monte Carlo SS in the NASCAR Nationwide Series in a minimum of the 24 confirmed companion events, with more non-companion races to be added if possible. "It is with great pleasure that I announce the addition of a very talented driver to the Hendrick Motorsports racing family - Carl Edwards", said Hendrick. "Carl is a racer - he puts out 110% effort on every lap, which is something that really embodies the spirit of the incredible work ethic of Hendrick Motorsports. I couldn't be happier to introduce him as the new driver of the #5, and I know the crew guys will be overjoyed to have him behind the wheel competing for championships in the years to come". Edwards currently races with Roush Racing in the Cup Series, and ranks 12th in series standings with 4 top 5s, 5 top 10s, and 2 poles. "I am really happy to be sitting here right now. Things have come together really quickly over the past week, and I already am looking forward to next season. Hendrick is such a great team, and all you have to do is look at the points standings to see how much they're dominating. This is the opportunity of a lifetime, and I am incredibly grateful to Mr. Hendrick for giving me the offer to run the #5 car in both Cup and Busch", said Edwards. The announcement leaves Kyle Busch out of a ride for next season, despite being ranked 3rd in the standings with 1 top 5 and 5 top 10s. (ESPN.com) (5/15/07)
