Peyton Sellers signs with Penske
Penske Racing announced an exciting addition to its 2008 NASCAR Nationwide Series driver lineup this morning, as 23-year old Peyton Sellers was introduced as a Penske development driver. Sellers will drive a limited schedule in the #12 Penske Truck Rentals Dodge Charger, which will be primarily driven by Sam Hornish Jr., although Cup drivers Ryan Newman, Casey Mears, and Travis Kvapil will also get an occasional start in the car. The Virginia native impressed in his first season of competition in the NASCAR AutoZone West Series last year, posting 1 win, 6 top 5s, and 2 poles in 12 starts en route to a 5th place series finish. This season, his family-owned operation has moved over to the more competitive NASCAR Busch East Series, where he ranks 4th in points through 5 races, with 2 top 5s and 3 top 10s thus far. "We're excited to add Peyton to our team," said owner Roger Penske. "He's a bright young talent and he's got all the makings of a future star on top of being just a genuinely happy and nice kid, and he's gonna fit in really nicely with the Penske Racing team next year." "I just wanna take a minute to thank Roger Penske for having the faith in me to sign me to a 2 year deal. There's a ton of other kids out there that don't have the funding and would love to be in my place, so I know I've got a lot of pressure on me but I think I'm ready for the challenge," said Sellers. Penske did not give an exact number of races Sellers would race in, but said it would not be more than 7 and would likely be limited to tracks under 1.5 miles if possible. (NASCAR.com) (6/22/07)
