Evernham downsizing to 2-car operation Ray Evernham, principal owner of Evernham Motorsports, told reporters in a teleconference this morning that he would only run 2 cars in the Sprint Cup Series next season, the #9 and #91. The #19, which had been driven by Jason Leffler with funding from Sherwin-Williams, will be eliminated, but Sherwin-Williams will move to Scott Riggs and the #91 team, replacing Pizza Hut, which had opted to leave the realm of NASCAR sponsorship. "With the COT coming next year, we knew we couldn't run a team with no full-time sponsor," said Evernham. "Plus, we didn't think there were any available drivers that would have been a good fit in the #19 car, so this move was purely logical." Leffler is departing after the season for Richard Childress Racing. Alongside Riggs in 2008 will be Kasey Kahne, who has been with Evernham since his rookie campaign in 2004, and will have sponsorship from Best Buy for next season. "I think that having only two cars is going to help the team," said Kahne. "We're not laying anybody off, so both me and Scott will have more resources directed towards us and that's gonna be critical with the COT coming next season." (ESPN.com) (6/30/07)
