This was my 2nd offline season, I took away the first Pocono date and the second Loudon date to keep North Wilkesboro on the schedule.
Mark Martin won the $100,000 Winston Bonus for the 2nd year in a row.
-Mark won the Daytona 500 and Winston 500.
-Roush Racing teammate Ted Musgrave won the Coca-Cola 600, Mark had a miserable race, starting shotgun and finishing 41st.
-Ken Schrader won the Southern 500, Mark finished 3rd after dominating the race, leading 146 of 184 laps.
This season produced 13 different winners, and 3 first-time winners.
-Ted Musgrave at Charlotte I
-Johnny Benson at Bristol II
-Mike Skinner at Atlanta II
-Dale Earnhardt had the most wins with 7.
-Jeff Gordon had 5 wins.
-Mark Martin had 4 wins.
-Champion Bill Elliott won 3 races in 1997, all in a row at Dover II, Martinsville II, and Charlotte II.
Just when I thought last season couldn't be topped, 16 different drivers won a Pole.
-Mark Martin had the most poles with 4.
-Mark won all 4 of his poles in a row, the first 4 races of the season.
-Jeff Gordon, Dale Earnhardt, Ricky Rudd, and Terry Labonte all had 3 poles each.
-Jeff Gordon won his 3 poles in a row at Watkins Glen, Michigan II, and Bristol II.
-Bobby Hamilton, Bill Elliott, Geoffrey Bodine, Joe Nemechek, and Rusty Wallace all had 2 poles each.
-Joe Nemechek won 2 straight poles in Fontana and Daytona II.
-The remaining pole winners were Kyle Petty (Charlotte II), Ernie Irvan (North Wilkesboro I), Darrell Waltrip (Talladega II), Dale Jarrett (Texas), Sterling Marlin (Michigan I), and Jeff Burton (Bristol I).
31 of the 56 drivers recorded a Top-5 finish.
-Jeff Gordon had the most with 17.
-Dale Jarrett had the 2nd most with 15.
-Dale Earnhardt and Mark Martin both had 13 each.
-Ken Schrader, Jeff Burton, Terry Labonte, and Champion Bill Elliott had 10 each.
-Oddly enough, Mike Skinner only recorded one top-5, his win at Atlanta II.
46 of the 56 drivers recorded a Top-10 finish.
-Dale Jarrett had the most with 21.
-Jeff Gordon had the 2nd most with 19.
-Ken Schrader, Dale Earnhardt, and Champion Bill Elliott all had 17 each.
47 of the 56 drivers recorded a DNF.
-Lake Speed had the most once again with 9.
-Mike Skinner and Michael Waltrip had 8 each.
-Dick Trickle, Kenny Wallace, Ricky Rudd, and Ted Musgrave all had 7 each.
-Champion Bill Elliott only had 2; Dover I finishing 33rd after starting 6th, and Darlington II finishing 29th after starting 10th.
Dale Earnhardt had the best Starting Position average at 6.06.
-In 3 races, part-time rookie Kenny Irwin Jr. posted an average of 8.67

Among those who ran the full season, Champion Bill Elliott had the best Finishing Position average at 11.88.
-In 1 race, Jeff Purvis finished 10th in the Daytona 500, giving him the best average by default.
-In 3 races, Ed Berrier posted an average of 11.67, 2nd best average by default

3. Although Jeff Gordon finished 3rd, he fell 11 points short of Bill Elliott, who in just the final 8 races won 3 straight in Dover, Martinsville, and Charlotte. A performance reminiscent of Tony Stewart in 2011.
