Race 2 - Auto Club 500The NASCAR Nextel Cup Series, fresh off the season opener in Daytona Beach, Florida, trekked cross-country for its next event. The Auto Club 500 was held on another brisk afternoon, with temperatures ranging in the mid-40s for much of the event. Last year's event saw the closest finish in NASCAR history, and while the race from Fontana this season didn't replicate that feat, it certainly provided some late race drama. Clint Bowyer started from the pole for the second consecutive event to open the season, but was never a factor, finishing a lap down in 21st. Kurt Busch and Jimmie Johnson led the first tenth of the race, but Ryan Newman dominated the next portion of the race, leading 72 laps. The first of 2 caution flags flew on lap 125 for Michael Waltrip's crash, sending the field down pit road. Bobby Hamilton Jr. led the first 15 laps after the restart, until Travis Kvapil passed him. Kvapil led the most laps in the race with 101, and held down the lead until lap 231, when the second and final caution flag flew when Todd Kluever blew an engine and collided with Kenny Wallace. Kvapil led once again on the restart, but was passed by Kevin Harvick on lap 242. Harvick gave it back just 3 laps later, however, as Kvapil utilized the draft to slingshot past him entering turn 1. Matt Kenseth followed Kvapil, and stalked the #77 car until lap 249. With just a lap and a half to go, Kenseth made a last-second dive to the inside of Kvapil entering turn 3, and the two raced side by side until Kenseth finally cleared Kvapil on the backstretch. Despite leading just 4 laps in the event, Kenseth was able to hold off the dominant driver of the afternoon and claim his first victory of the season in the 2nd race after suffering through a winless season in 2006. Jack Roush Statement: I'm delighted to be back in victory lane already. We had such a good weekend and all 4 cars were fast in all of the practices. Matt and the guys in the pits had a perfect race and really deserved that win. We had a bunch of close calls late last season but couldn't pull it off so it feels really good for the 17 boys to get that monkey off their back. Carl had a great day, but it's a shame that Greg and Todd had their troubles. Greg was solid for all day long, but the last green flag run he got tight and dropped back in traffic and he had a little contact with another car on pit road that hurt his aerodynamics just enough to drop him back. And I'm certainly disappointed that one of our Roush-Yates motors blew on Todd's car, but it was an isolated freak incident so I'm not too worried about it. He's had a real rough start to his rookie year but we know based on his performance part-time last season that he's gonna be alright, so I think next week we'll get in the right direction; Vegas is one of his favorites. So we had a little bit of bad luck but for the most part it was a great weekend, and I'm really proud of our of our guys.

RCR TEAM STATEMENT:
"We had a pretty good race here at the RCR camp. Our team as a whole led 28 laps. Here is a rundown of our driver's races:"
Clint Bowyer, #07 Jack Daniel's Chevy
Started: 1st Finished: 21st Laps Led: 0 Points Position: 10th
Driver Comments: "The only good thing about our weekend was that we won the pole. Other than that the race was absolute crap. I guess we'll get after it next week." (Walks away, shaking head in disappointment)
Kurt Busch, #33 Monster Energy Chevy Started: 4th Finished: 16th Laps Led: 19 Points Position: 24th
Driver Comments: "Our race started off pretty good but veered off from there. We led 19 laps but that is just about it. Hopefully I can get a better finish at my home track, Vegas."
Jeff Burton, #31 Cingular Wireless Chevy Started: 5th Finished: 11th Laps Led: 1 Points Position: 8th
Driver Comments: "We had a pretty good race. Finishing right outside the Top 10 is pretty darn near good, especially if it keeps us in good position."
Kevin Harvick, #29 UPS Chevy Started: 7th Finished: 3rd Laps Led: 8 Points Position: 7th
Driver Comments: "We could've had that race there at the end, man. If we didn't get loose and Kvapil and Kenseth weren't so fast, I believe we could've been in victory lane. Kudos to Matt, though, for winning after having a winless '06. I'll definitely take a 3rd."
The RCR crew looks to be back in contention at Las Vegas next week. Let's get that win!

Bill Davis Racing statement:
"This weekend was about what we expected. Aric Almirola did exceptional. Looking at stats, we finished two laps down. Along with those who finished two laps down, we were third on that list. There were four more drivers below us that were also two laps down. For the people we're racing against, we're doing a pretty good job. The next step in our goal to be a better team is to start racing more and more people, if you will. We want to raise ourselves and race against the better drivers. Kvapil, Biffle, Johnson, Harvick. Those are the guys we want to be competing against every weekend. Aric will continue to develop, as will the race team."
