NASCAR to mandate special colored parts for 6 races in 2008
NASCAR announced today that in 6 races in 2008, all teams in all series will be mandated to run special colors on certain parts of the cars. For the Memorial Day Weekend and Independence Day Weekend races, all teams in the Sprint Cup Series will feature white side skirts, roof rails, and a white spoiler, splitter, and shark fin. On the side skirts, front of the spoiler, and shark fin will be red and blue stars to carry out a patriotic spirit for the race. In the Nationwide Series, teams will have a white front valence tape, white side skirts, and a white spoiler. The same red and blue stars will be featured on the front of the spoiler and on the side skirts. In addition to having patriotic-themed parts, all teams will also honor the military by inviting a member from each branch of the United States military to join their pit crews as VIPs for the weekends. Members from the United States Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force, and Coast Guard will each get special access in these two events.
NASCAR will also mandate these same parts to be magenta for all races during the month of October in recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Breast Cancer, the leading type of cancer in women, causes over half a million deaths per year. "We believe that it is important to show support for both men and women with breast cancer during October," said NASCAR Chairman Brian France. "While the vast majority of drivers and crew members are men, we all know that women are the ones behind the scenes helping support them and tolerating their ever-busy schedules. They may not be as visible as men, but women are absolutely one of the biggest parts of our sport and we wanted to connect with fans who have suffered or know people who have suffered from breast cancer." Like members of the armed forces, survivors of breast cancer will be honored by NASCAR and receive VIP passes to view the races from the pits of team.
