2008 Season Outlook
Paging Mark Martin. Jeff Burton is beginning to look like he could challenge Martin for the title of best driver without a championship, as he might have watched his final opportunity sail away from Miami, Florida last November. Burton's career has been a roller coaster, with a period of 4 consecutive top 5 points finishes in the late 1990s. But as he got older, it seemed as if his drive left him. He slipped all the way back to 18th in 2004 having left his longtime home at Roush Racing for Richard Childress Racing. But once he started a season with RCR, it seemed as if he was a new driver. Burton rallied all the way back to 4th in 2005, then 3rd in 2006, and ultimately finished 2nd in last year's battle, losing the points lead in the final race of the season. It was a bitter pill to swallow, as Homestead was his final race with RCR, as he moves to Braun Edwards Racing. BER is a team on the rise, but they are still very unproven, with only a plate track win on their resume. Expect Burton to regress quite a bit in 2008, but he could still easily challenge for a Chase spot if BER is on top of their game from the get go.
