2004 Silly Season
Juggernaut Racing Team has terminated Michael La Terza's and Richard Young's contracts with the team. La Terza failed to qualify in 3 of the final 6 races and plummeted into 20th in the championship standings, despite 2 victories, 7 top 5's and 15 top 10's. At one point in the season, Michael La Terza was as high as 2nd in the standings. On the other hand, even though Richard Young made all 36 starts, Young finished 22nd in the standings. In addition, Safe-T Fire Extinguishers will leave the team, however, Golden Eagle Airlines will stay as an associate sponsor of the Juggernaut Racing Team.
Papyrus Racing was extremely impressed with the performance of Billy Thompson, an up and coming 20 year old from Memphis, Tennessee. Thompson earned 1 victory, 3 top 5's, 4 top 10's and had an average finish of 4.25 in only 4 races. With the performance, Papyrus Racing tabbed Billy Thompson as the man to drive the #86 Chevrolet for the full 2004 schedule and compete for Rookie of the Year honors. McDonald's, one of the most popular and well-known fast food chains in the world, will be the primary sponsor on the #86. In addition, additional sponsorship will come from Papyrus Racing Games and the ICL Group. On the other hand, Thomas Brown, who replaced the injured Kevin Iannarelli after the Dover race, will drive the #170 Sierra Chevrolet full-time and compete with teammate Billy Thompson for Rookie of the Year honors.
Xoron Racing and Rab-O-Tech racing have teamed up to form XR Enterprises. The team will field 3 cars and will field Dodge Intrepid's. John Beatty will return to the team driving the #121 Xoron Dodge except this time he will have 2 new teammates: Greg Hill and Brice Blackman. Greg Hill, who drove for Rab-O-Tech Racing last year and finished 15th in points, will drive the same number (#188) and sponsor he had last year. On the other hand, Brice Blackman, a 26 year old road course specialist from Seattle, Washington, will run a part-time schedule driving the #179 Victory Sports Collectibles Dodge.
Despite a 4th place finish in the championship standings, Ocean Point Racing and John Masella have decided to close up shop. When asked about why the team closed, a representative for Ocean Point Racing simply said "we didn't have enough funds to continue forward and the Ocean Point Racing team believes that closing up shop was the only option".
After finishing the 1st season of the Winston Cup Series, O'Kelvin Racing has decided to stop fielding Winston Cup Series cars and focus on the newly formed Busch Series and Craftsman Truck Series.
