Race #32
The NASCAR Convertible Series made their 32nd stop of 1956 at the Hickory Speedway, in Hickory, North Carolina.
Jimmy Massey led a field of twenty four drivers to the green as for the second time in series history drivers raced at the 0.400 mile short track, but unlike the previous event earlier in the season, this visit was on a new pavement and in front of a crowd of five thousand people. Curtis Turner, who was looking for his sixth win in a row, but starting in the back would make that nearly impossible as he had to work his way up through the field and only cracked the top ten around the halfway mark.
Welborn would dominate much of the day but Jimmie Lewallen, who was driving a car owned by Welborn, would challenge him for the lead allowing for a new challenger to take advantage. Bob Beck, who was making his sixth career start, would take advantage of the dueling drivers and would take the lead late in the race and would go on to score his first career win as well as ending the dominating performance of Curtis Turner.
