Race 14: Dollar General 200 at Bristol Motor Speedway; Bristol, Tennessee, August 20th, 1997 FISHER DOMINATES, EARNS FIRST CAREER WINBy Nick Johnson/NASCAR.com - August 21st, 1997BRISTOL, TN - After Ryan Fisher finished third in Volusia, his first race back in his own car, he said that the wins would come soon enough and nearly two months later he stood tall in victory lane as the winner of the Dollar General 200 after leading a race-high 121 laps. Fisher's car seemed to handle just right and he was able to navigate through lapped traffic in a masterful manner to elude the competition. The first person to congratulate him in victory lane was Rob Snyder, who fans have considered to be Fisher's best friend given what they went through earlier in the season. Needless to say the celebration echoed through Thunder Valley as Fisher had his career-defining moment. Fisher in victory lane; "We just had a damn good car tonight and everything seemed to fall our way... I can't thank these guys enough for the hard work they've all put into not only this race but each race since Volusia. Races like this make me more excited for the remainder of the season!" This victory moved Fisher up to 27th in points while Roger Fowler leaves Bristol finishing 15th and leading the standings by five points over rookie Derek Hawkins who finished 4th. Trent Blanchard, Tim Foster, Jr., and Becky Conway round out the top five in points. It's usually by this point in the season that the field starts thinning out as backmarkers will pull out of the competition and usually mark the All-American 400 at Nashville as their final race of the season. But for three drivers; Ernie Bryant, Scotty Hayes, and Clyde Houston, the well has run dry for their teams and all three will return home and wait for Nashville in October. As for the remaining part-time drivers that have competed this season the likes of Barry Peterson, Mike Palmer, Calvin Putnam, and Peter Murphy, Palmer intends to run four more races this season from North Wilkesboro through Memphis and Peterson plans on entering next week's race at Lanier and the season finale at Five Flags in December. There has been no word from the Putnam camp, whose only scheduled race remaining is at South Boston in September as the team failed to qualify their last time out at Louisville. Finally, Murphy's planned remaining races include South Boston, North Wilkesboro, Concord, and Langley but the only guaranteed race is Wilkesboro. The next race of the season takes place at Lanier National Speedway on August 30th. Race 15: Rose's Discount Stores 200 at Lanier National Speedway; Braselton, Georgia; August 30th, 1997 FOSTER OUTLASTS FISHER FOR 2ND WIN OF '97By Nick Johnson/NASCAR.com - August 31st, 1997BRASELTON, GA - It was a true driver's duel between Ryan Fisher and Tim Foster, Jr. under overcast skies at Lanier but Foster managed to hold off his adversary and take home his second win of the year and inch closer to the points lead. Foster led 89 laps after qualifying third and pulls in within seven points of Roger Fowler who finished 7th. Lanier proved to be rough on the five rookies in yesterday's race, the highest finishing being Chad Moon in 11th. Foster in victory lane: "This feels like a total rollercoaster season for us. If you told me that I'd be standing here in victory lane with two wins and a primary sponsor back at Orlando, I'd say you were crazy. Ever since Citgo came aboard for the ride, I've been wanting to show them that this is a team worth sticking to and I think we've been doing a great job of that!" The caution waved five times for a total of 25 laps, including the halfway caution at lap 100. With only seven races remaining on the schedule, Fowler leads Foster, Jr., Blanchard, Pearson, Conway, and Hawkins as the series takes a breather before heading to the South Boston Speedway on September 20th. No doubt the points race will be sure to flare up in the coming weeks as drivers jockey for every point they can grab. Going back to the subject of drivers reducing their races, Barry Peterson's #0 team announced they've closed down for the remainder of the season after withdrawing from this past weekend's race in Lanier. Ernie Bryant and Scotty Hayes have also announced during the past week that they will not be racing either for the remainder of the season. Peter Murphy stated that he is only planning on running North Wilkesboro before calling it quits for the season. Finally, Clyde Houston's #3 seems to be done for the year as well as there was no response from the Concord, North Carolina driver. This time of year can be rough for those either trying to get their foot in the door or those doing this as a hobby which ultimately gets rid of the backmarkers and lets the full-time drivers with funding go at it without the fear of rolling chicanes. Race 16: All Pro Auto Parts 250 at South Boston Speedway; South Boston, Virginia, September 30th, 1997 MOON SHINES BRIGHTLY IN SOUTH BOSTON, FOWLER STUMBLESBy Nick Johnson/NASCAR.com - October 1st, 1997SOUTH BOSTON, VA - In the land the Burton brothers call home, excitement filled the autumn air at South Boston as drama unfolded early. They say if you're going to have a DNF, do it early in the season where you have plenty of time to make it up but Roger Fowler's string of finishing races came to an abrupt end on lap 89 as the oil pump failed in the Dollar General Chevrolet and caused the first caution of the night as oil dripped onto the track. Fowler's misfortune meant he took a beating in the points, dropping to fourth in points and 20 behind new points leader Trent Blanchard who feels like he's finally redeemed himself for the penalty at Martinsville earlier in the season that would've given him the points lead then back in April. But all eyes were on Chad Moon as he bested Ryan Fisher and Robby Anderson in a three-car fight for the win to take home his second victory of the season despite having to pit on the backstretch, a feat that hasn't been seen since Steve Grissom won the Food City 250 in the Nascar Busch Series at Bristol in August of 1995. Moon led 41 laps and sits third in points just 19 back of Blanchard, who finished fourth and led the most laps with 138. "We've definitely got a dogfight going on for the championship and no doubt these fans are in for a whale of a show in these last six races." Blanchard stated after the race. The top four drivers in points, Blanchard, Foster, Moon, and Fowler are considered the heavy favorites to win the series championship based on the following factors: Blanchard: More top-5 (8) and top-10 (12) finishes than anyone else and has led more laps this year (600) than anyone else. Foster: Since his win at Louisville, he's had a pole, a win, 3 top-5s, and 4 top-10s along with no DNFs this season. He is the only full-time driver without a DNF this season. Moon: Though he has three DNFs this season, Moon has proven to be a threat when he gets into a rhythm. Fowler: Consistency, consistency, consistency. The former seven-time champion up until South Boston was able to keep his car out of trouble and running at the finish while everyone else seemed to have issues. The series moves on to their only repeat stop on the schedule at the historic North Wilkesboro Speedway for the Tyson Holly Farms 200 on September 28th. ESPN2 will bring the coverage at noon eastern. Race 17: Tyson Holly Farms 200 at North Wilkesboro Speedway; North Wilkesboro, North Carolina; September 28th, 1997 CAMPBELL WINS AS NEW POINTS LEADER EMERGESBy Nick Johnson/NASCAR.com - September 30th, 1997NORTH WILKESBORO, NC - Gary Campbell had to wait four months but the Coca-Cola machine returned to victory lane after leading a race-high 63 laps and holding off Tim Foster, Jr. who assumed the points lead after Trent Blanchard got caught up in a lap 97 crash, relegating him to a 25th place finish. "The kid's got a nice lead in the points now with only a handful of races to go. If he keeps running consistent like this, it'll be tough trying to catch him." Roger Fowler stated in an interview after finishing third. Foster now holds a 20 point lead over Roger Fowler, a 21 point lead over Trent Blanchard, 23 points over Gary Campbell who is considered a total dark horse to win the championship, and 33 points ahead of Chad Moon. Race-winner Gary Campbell on his championship hopes: "I honestly didn't think we had a shot in hell of winning the championship but here we are nonetheless! If we can continue being consistent, there's no reason why we won't be able to contend come Five Flags." "Consistency has been our motto all season and that's not about to change in these last five races of the season. We've gotta be very careful but we can't just play conservatively either. It's all about being smart and playing our cards right." Foster was quoted to say after his runner-up finish to Campbell. ASA drivers aside, Tim Foster, Jr. has the best average starting (8.47) and finishing (9.76) positions of the series regulars. The Raybestos Rookie of the Year race is basically down to Chad Moon and Derek Hawkins while Blaine Freeman hasn't exactly managed to live up to expectations and Richie Howard's luck has been turning south with four DNFs this season. The pole for this race was decided in a strange manner; a classic schoolyard game of rock, paper, scissors as both Damian Washington and Troy Pearson both turned in the fastest qualifying lap of 20.004 seconds / 112.478 mph. Washington was awarded the pole in a best two-of-three series. The caution waved nine times for 45 laps and this race at North Wilkesboro brought three drivers their first top-ten finish of the season; John Kendrick in 7th, Vince Stevens in 9th, and Greg Partridge in 10th. Mike Palmer was scheduled to return to the tour at North Wilkesboro but he was unable to achieve transportation for his equipment. Palmer intends to return next week and will run the season finale at Five Flags Speedway. The series will take to the Concord Motorsports Park for the Greased Lightning 200 on October 4th and Speedvision will carry the coverage starting at 7:00pm eastern. Race 18: Greased Lightning 200 at Concord Motorsports Park; Concord, North Carolina, October 4th, 1997 FOSTER DOMINATES, EXTENDS POINTS LEADBy Nick Johnson/NASCAR.com - October 5th, 1997CONCORD, NC - One could describe Tim Foster, Jr.'s car as greased lightning under the lights and before a sold out crowd in Concord as he led a race-high 151 laps en route to his series-leading third win of the season and with the misfortune of his competitors has extended his points lead to 37 over Trent Blanchard who finished 11th, first car off the lead lap. Gary Campbell is third in points 43 points back after finishing 15th, Derek Hawkins, Rob Snyder, and Roger Fowler are tied for fourth 52 points back after finishing 10th, 2nd, and 27th respectively. Fowler was having a miserable night in 25th when a lap 81 crash took him out of the running. Foster after his commanding victory: "Having a big points cushion like this is pretty important for us given the longest race of our season is coming up next. We might even be good enough to knock those ASA guys off their pedestals." Foster of course is referring to the All-American 400 at the Nashville Fairgrounds, the longest race of the season where Kevin Cywinski, Gary St. Amant, Bob Senneker, and Mike Eddy will all look to achieve victory in one of the nation's most prestigious short track races on October 19th. Then at Memphis the following week, Mike Eddy and Kevin Cywinski will participate in the Kroger 150 on October 25th. Race 19: All-American 400 at Nashville Fairgrounds Speedway; Nashville, Tennessee; October 19th, 1997 ASA CHAMPION CYWINSKI OUTLASTS HAWKINS, POINTS LEAD WIDENSBy Nick Johnson/NASCAR.com - October 20th, 1997NASHVILLE, TN - What do you do when you've just won the ASA Championship? Ride into Nashville and win one of the nation's biggest short track races, the All-American 400 at Nashville. That's exactly what 1996 ASA Rookie of the Year Kevin Cywinski did after leading 88 laps while rookie Derek Hawkins had his best career finish of 2nd after leading 29 laps himself. Cywinski in victory lane: "It's a ton of fun getting to run with these guys and Mike [Eddy] and I are excited to run again with these guys in Memphis next week." Hawkins on finishing 2nd: "They say you gotta lose some before you win some, but I guess nobody told Richie [Howard] back in January. But it feels great knowing I was able to keep my car up near the front and contend for a win. Putting these kinds of races together really boosts the team's morale and can't wait to try it again next week." Vince Stevens opened a lot of eyes around the garage when he went from 7th to first, passing Mike Eddy on lap 190, and led 85 laps, his first laps led of the season before eventually finishing 25th, two laps down. They say it's never over until the fat lady sings, but there's no doubt in the garage after the race that she's warming up. With a solid third place finish and leading a race-high 147 laps, Tim Foster, Jr. has extended his points lead to 56 over Derek Hawkins, 59 over Trent Blanchard, 65 over Rob Snyder, and 71 over Roger Fowler. Foster on his points day: "I told my guys coming into this race that we're gonna be smart and conservative with our decision-making and get as many points as we can. This was a long race where anything could happen, kind of like our version of the Coke 600 in Charlotte." The maximum amount of points a driver can earn is 47: 40 for winning, 1 for the pole, 1 for leading a lap, and 5 for leading the most laps. 16 drivers are mathematically-eligible to win the championship, down to Kurt Collins who is 121 points back. About half those drivers will most likely be eliminated from contention following the next race at Memphis. Race 20: Kroger 150 at Memphis International Raceway; Memphis, Tennessee; October 25th, 1997 2 IN A ROW FOR ASA AS EDDY WINS, FOSTER TITLE IMMINENTBy Nick Johnson/NASCAR.com - October 26th, 1997MEMPHIS, TN - Seven-time ASA Champion Mike Eddy managed to hold off Leroy Gardner and join Kevin Cywinski as the only ASA drivers to win on the NASCAR Southeast Tour, leading 10 laps in the process. With his 6th place finish, Tim Foster, Jr. is set to clinch the 1997 NASCAR All Pro Southeast Series championship over his adversaries as he now leads by 71 points over Trent Blanchard. The fewest possible points Foster can earn in these final two races is 25; 15 at Langley and 10 at Five Flags as both tracks have a maximum field size of 26 and 31 cars respectively. Even if Blanchard managed to score the most points in both remaining races, he would come up two points shy of the championship and finish runner-up for the second year in a row. As stated earlier, the most points a driver can earn in a single race is 47; 40 for the winner, 1 for the pole, 1 for leading a lap, and 5 for leading the most laps. 47x2=94 and 94-25=69 Foster's comments post-race: "I'm holding in my excitement right now. These guys have done nothing but work their asses off the whole year, even before the Meijer deal at Louisville. I told everyone that we were gonna make a late charge for the championship and here we are." As of right now all Foster has to do is take the green flag in both remaining races to win the title and seeing as how Trent Blanchard has had four finishes in a row outside of the top-10 and three finishes outside the top-15, the fat lady is about to take the stage. Race 21: Naturally Fresh Foods 200 at Langley Speedway; Hampton, Virginia; November 9th, 1997 FOSTER CLINCHES CHAMPIONSHIP, PEARSON WINS 2ND RACE OF '97By Nick Johnson/NASCAR.com - November 13th, 1997HAMPTON, VA - As Troy Pearson took the checkered flag under the lights at Langley, he wasn't the only driver celebrating as Tim Foster, Jr. has officially clinched the 1997 NASCAR All Pro Southeast Series championship with another sixth place finish as his points lead increased by a single point over Trent Blanchard now at 72. Several drivers congratulated the #4 team on their surprise championship that was certainly well-deserved once a primary sponsor came on board at Louisville and another came on board the following race. Trent Blanchard on potentially finishing second in points: "For the second year in a row, it stings. Running inconsistently is what screwed us up last season and it came back to bite us this season. We'll just have to go to Five Flags and try to end this season with a win." Southeast series legend and seven-time champion Roger Fowler said in an interview on Friday that he would have an announcement to make in the coming weeks leading up to the season finale at Five Flags Speedway in Pensacola, set to take place the day before the annual Snowball Derby, another prestigious short track race. Rumors have been flying around as to what the announcement will consist of, most thinking retirement for the 45-year old of Goodlettsville, Tennessee. Fowler finished 8th after leading a race-high 67 laps and is third in points, 73 behind Foster. Tim Foster, Jr.'s team announced Monday that they will run a special scheme at Five Flags as Citgo congratulates the 4 team on a tremendous season in which they have four poles, three wins, ten top-5s, 15 top-10s, have led the most laps all season, have the best average starting and finishing position of all series regulars, accumulated the most bonus points, and is the only team that has run all 21 races so far without a single DNF. The scheme is part of Citgo Salutes the Champ and will feature Tim's signature on the hood and his father's signature on the passenger side window as the family-owned team that won Rookie of the Year in 1994 celebrates their championship victory. Foster, Sr. was a former Southeast series driver who competed from 1980-1993, winning three championships in 1985, 1987, and 1990, naming his son as his successor as Junior went on to win Rookie of the Year honors in 1994. This is it, folks. The fat lady is singing her lungs out. The NASCAR All Pro Southeast Series will finish their season with the Pensacola USA 250 at Five Flags Speedway on December 6th on ESPN2 as the drivers return home to enjoy the Thanksgiving holiday before wrapping up the 22-race schedule where the finale has pride on the line and a Rookie of the Year battle between Derek Hawkins and Chad Moon. ROGER FOWLER ANNOUNCES RETIREMENTBy Nick Johnson/NASCAR.com - November 30th, 1997GOODLETTSVILLE, TN - After 27 seasons, seven championships, and 82 wins, the banana boat is leaving the harbor. Before a large crowd at Dollar General's corporate headquarters in his hometown of Goodlettsville, Tennessee, Roger Fowler announced after Thanksgiving that he will retire from racing. The 45-year old is the oldest of all the full-time competitors, four years older than the next oldest in Neil Charles. "This is one of the hardest decisions I've ever had to make, but I know it's one that will serve me well in the long run. I have a wife and four children to think about and the last thing I want to do is not be there for them. Dollar General has been great not only to my team these past two decades but also to my family and I believe it's only fitting for the banana boat to stay in the family." Fowler was quoted as he named his eldest son, 20-year old James Roger "J.R." Fowler, as the driver of the #99 Chevrolet starting in 1998. J.R. has been running late model races around Tennessee the past four years waiting for this opportunity with Dollar General sponsoring him. "I know Tim Foster [Jr.] just won a championship like his dad did and now I've got the chance to be a champion just like my dad. I can't wait to get started with these guys and make my own name in this series." The younger Fowler stated as the team plans on testing at the Nashville Fairgrounds Speedway before the season opener at Walt Disney World Speedway where J.R. will look to make it two years in a row that a rookie kicked off the season with a victory just as Richie Howard did in Wayne Spears's #75 this January. To commemorate his final race, Roger Fowler will run a special inverse scheme under the lights at Five Flags hoping to ride off into the night with career win #83. In 21 races this season, Fowler earned two poles at North Wilkesboro in April and the most recent race at Langley, one win at Heartland Park, four top-5s, and ten top-10s.
