Points leader Rick Mears led the field to the Green Flag and would lead the first six laps before he was passed by Steve Chassey who would be passed by Scott Brayton six laps later as Brayton would lead almost till halfway, losing the lead when the first caution came out for Rocky Moran's stalled car, allowing for Bob Lazier to take the lead with almost a full lap lead over the rest of the field, as all Lazier had to do was ride around for the last half of the race, making no mistakes, and the win would be his.
However, just before the white flag, trouble struck as Lazier entered Turn 5 and lost control, spinning out and slamming hard into the tire barriers, his car completely destroyed and done for the day.
