Main changes from the previous season: - Buick left NASCAR, so Kenny Bernstein, Bobby Allison Motorsposrts, Stavola Brothers team switches to Ford, Stanley Smith switches to Chevrolet
- Melling Racing loses his main sponsor and his driver: Bill Elliott, who joins in the #11 Ford of Junior Johnson. Phil Parsons will drive the #9 Ford for the first two races of the season.
- Geoffrey Bodine: from #11 car of Junior Johnson, to Bud Moore Racing #15 car.
- Morgan Shepherd: from Bud Moore Racing car #15, to Wood Brothers Racing #21 car
- Dale Jarrett: joins in the rookie team Joe Gibbs Racing, driving the #18 Chevrolet
- Bobby Hillin Jr: left Dick Moroso team to join in the Team Ireland #31 Chevy for a part time schedule
- Moroso Racing: the #20 car became a part time ride.
- At the beginning of the season there are no full-time ROTY contender.

Race #1 of 29 -Daytona 500 by STP @ Daytona International Speedway Green flag!Lap 10; Chevrolets up front in the first 10 laps Last Daytona 500 for the King Richard Petty Lap 24; Earnhardt in the lead with Wilson and Skinner on the inside Lap 29; Brad Teague and Hut Stricklin made contact with Petty on the backstretch and slide on the grass. Mike Potter is also involved. Derrick Cope comes out of pit road first and leads the field at the restart Lap 48; with the lapped cars the field is now divided in groups Lap 53; contact between Schacht and Baker on the tri-oval. The #47 goes in the grass but is able to be back on track. Lap 55; Mark Martin in the lead Lap 66; Earnhardt loses the draft from the main group. He is in 24th place Lap 67; Ernie Irvan Chevy stops with some engine problem Lap 70; green flag pit stops with 10 laps to go Lap 71; the yellow is out. Little, Shepherd and Labonte crash out of turn 4. Stanley Smith is involved while was entering the pit road and he has to retire. On the next restart Schrader is the leader with Petty and Kulwicki behind. Race #2 of 29 -GM Goodwrench 500 @ North Carolina Speedway Starting gridGreen flag!Lap 13; Rusty Wallace increase his lead over Kyle Petty and Dale Earnhardt Lap 18; battle for the 4th place with the Daytona 500 winner Derrick Cope, Ricky Rudd, Mark Martin and Dale Jarrett Lap 47-49; green flag stops. With the undercut strategy Cope takes the lead. Wallace cycles out in 4th place Lap 72; with better tires, Wallace is back in the lead Lap 81; Jimmy Spencer is spun out by Dallenbach Jr in turn 3. The cautions is out The pit lane on the backstretch creates some issues: Gant, Bodine and Belmont crash together and the #33 has to retire. Davey Allison race is ruined by a long stop. The #26 Ford of Brett Bodine stalls during the next restart causing another yellow flag. Wallace maintains the lead Lap 118; for the second race in a row Ernie Irvan Chevy stop for technical issues and brings another caution. Everybody stop for fuel and tires. Lap 122; just one lap after the restart Wallace has to stop from the lead to secure one lug nut. He cycles out just in front of the leader, still on the lead lap. Lap 132; Wallace is the fastest car on the track, now is trying to stays on the lead, just in front of the leader Kyle Petty. Lap 163; green flag stops. No changes up front Lap 187; the caution is out with 10 laps to go. Richard Petty is spun by Terry Labonte in turn 3. On the restart Kyle Petty has 6 lapped cars between him and the 2nd place car of Phil Parsons. Lap 194; Earnhardt takes the 2nd place Kyle Petty score his 1st win of the season!

Race #3 of 29 -Pontiac Excitement 400 @ Richmond International Raceway Starting gridGreen flag!Lap 7; Richard Petty crashes into Jimmy Means in turn 3 and the first caution is out. After the stops Sterling Marlin cycles out 1st, while the previous leader Wilson has a slow stop and he restarts outside the top 10. Lap 15; Allison and Schrader pass Marlin for the lead and they pulls away form the field Lap 56; the leading trio composed by Allison, Schrader and Irvan is followed by another trio with Petty, Wallace and Earnhardt
Lap 59; Irvan passes Schrader for the 2nd place.
Lap 63; green flag stops. Allison stays in the lead
Lap 76; Bobby Hamilton retires from the race
Lap 94; Wallace overtakes Irvan for the 2nd place
Lap 98; Kyle Petty takes the lead in turn 1-2
