The 2005 NASCAR Nextel Cup Series opens their season with the 26th annual running of the Budweiser Shootout at the famed Daytona international Speedway. This years race was shortened to a 56 lap affair instead of the usual 70, but the shorter race did not put a damper on the excitement.
Rusty Wallace led us to the green, with cars swapping the lead several times over in the opening stages, no-one holding the lead for more than 2 laps consecutively, but even so, strong cars were starting to show their hand, as Jimmie Johnson stayed within the top 10 always within striking distance. Rusty Wallace was another driver who showed early he could both draft, pass, and lead, while perennial favorite Dale Earnhardt Jr was up front as expected. The early going was very much ring-around-the-rosie, as the cars regularly went 3 wide throughout the pack, no one having fallen off the pace by the half way point.
Lap 35 the first round of pit stops occurred, as Terry Labonte, and Kasey Kahne would dive off the track to start the cycle. Lap 39 a majority of the lead pack would pull onto pit road including pole-sitter Rusty Wallace. The final cars pitted a lap late, and with under 10 to go 11 cars were in the fight, with Mark Martin holding strong out front. The next challenge would cone from Bobby Labonte, as the 2 dueled side by side trying to gain an edge. With 5 to go, Dale jr would make is move, but would be forced 3 wide by Jimmie Johnson as lapped traffic came into the fray. Johnson extended his advantage for split second before the Roushkateers of Kurt Busch and Mark Martin made a charge, as did Rusty Wallace and Bobby Labonte. But it would be a last lap surge from Greg Biffle would end up taking the shootout victory, capping off an exciting start to speedweeks.

Why was the race shortened?

Why was the race shortened? Because I used a Night Daytona track like it was ran IRL. But the Night Daytona track has 100% as 400 miles instead of 500 miles, so what 35% which is 70 laps on the day track got reduced to 56 on the night track and I forgot to adjust for that. By the time I had realized, I had already posted Practice and Qualifying, so I just rolled with it.

Welcome to today's running of the Hershey's Take 5 300 at the Daytona International Speedway, race #1 of the 2005 NASCAR Busch Series.
The front row was a wide gap of experience with NASCAR veteran Wally Dallenbach Jr starting alongside Rookie Denny Hamlin. The opening laps saw several drivers take the lead from Rookies like Denny Hamlin and Jon Wood to cup veterans Dale Earnhardt Jr and Kevin Havrick, with Justin Ashburn and Shane Hall falling off the pace in the opening stages.
Lap 20 Denny Hamlin gets forced four wide and runs up into Steve Grissom and Kasey Kahne starting the big one, with well over 24 cars involved. 16 Cars would fall out of the running as the field scrambled to try and avoid the wreck, including Carl Edwards, Kasey Kahne, front row Wally Dallenbach Jr and Denny Hamlin
Paul Menard would end up leading the field to the green on lap 25 with Kerry Earnhardt and Shane Hmiel. Paul Menard despite being shuffled back in lap traffic would end up being one of the dominant cars throughout the mid portion of the race, with Kerry Earnhardt, Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Ashton Lewis holding their own of the pointed end as well.
Lap 61 would see second round of pitstops and first green flag stops of the year take place as lead cars Menard, Biffle, Harvick, and Hmiel came down. THe rest of the cars would follow shortly after. Tony Stewart who pitted under the earlier yellow took command of the lead for several laps, before finally pitting on lap 83.
As the laps wound down it became ever more clear that this race would be between 4 cars, Kerry Earnhardt in the MWR #98, Dale Earnhardt Jr in the #81, Paul Menard in the #11, and Kevin Harvick in RCR's #21 entry. Lap 115 would see the florescent yellow #11 fall back to 4th in line, before using the draft to make a charge with less than 2 to go, team mate Earnhardt behind. Dale would try and go for a move entering turn 3, but in the end, it would not be enough, and Paul Menard would take his maiden Busch Series victory!
