Race #8 - STP 400
The eighth race of the 2012 season was the STP 400 at the Kansas Speedway.
Denny Hamlin led the field to the Green Flag and led the first nine laps as just like Texas, Kansas turned out to be a day full of wrecks, the first victims being Clint Bowyer and Bobby Labonte who both barely made it past ten laps before their day was done.
Upfront drivers swapped the lead after each pit stop, knowing fresher tires was the key, and Kyle Busch turned out to be the man, pulling away from the field he showed he still could get the job done despite his release from Joe Gibbs Racing. However with less then 100 laps to go, Kyle was involved in a spin and was damaged to the point he couldn't challenge for the lead, allowing Martin Truex Jr. to drive away and score yet another win in 2012.
Other Noticeables: Martin Truex Jr. scored his second win of the year, Truex Jr. led 3 times for 61 laps, including the final 55 laps, It was the 3rd win of his career and his first since Phoenix last year, 7 races ago, Joe Ruttman, making his first start since Dover in 2004, made his debut for Joe Gibbs Racing and finished the race under power in 12th, Carl Edwards, who finished 4th, kept his points lead, now 5 points over Ryan Newman

Well, Ruttman's 12th place run sure surprised me, and he also did a good job staying out of trouble. I still don't see him staying in that 18 car for the rest of the season, but I guess we'll see what happens down the road.

I'm amazed at how these cars use ARCA brakes.
30 drivers retired in a 400-mile race.

I'm amazed at how these cars use ARCA brakes. 30 drivers retired in a 400-mile race. And I get most of the ratings of NNRatings of the actual race aside from a few adjustments, and the AI strength is always on 70% so the fact that many wrecks and cautions is annoying at sometimes, but it makes it interesting.

Steakhouse 200
The fourth exhibition race of the 2012 season was the Steakhouse 200 at the Calder Park Thunderdome.
Before the race day even began, Jimmy Means, who had qualified for the event, withdrew his entry due to an engine blowing up in Happy Hour and did not have a replacement and NASCAR did not allow another car to take his place so only 41 drivers started the event. Tony Stewart led the field to the Green Flag but it was Kevin Harvick leading the first seven laps, as the tricky Thunderdome proved to be quite a challenge for many drivers as tire issues would knock out Mark Martin and Juan Pablo Montoya early in the event before the big wrecks began knocking out drivers like Bobby Labonte, Morgan Shepherd, Kyle Busch and others.
The lead swapped hands 26 times through the night as Kurt Busch, Tony Stewart, Jeff Gordon, Martin Truex Jr. and Kevin Harvick all had a good amount of time up front, but it was Harvick driving around Stewart with alittle more then 100 laps to go and pulled away but with two laps to go, Harvick would collide with Carl Edwards in Turn 3 bringing out the 15th and final caution. With the option of a Green, White and Checkered finish, NASCAR decided against it and ended the race under caution that resulted in the crowd booing heavily.
Other Noticeables: Kevin Harvick scored his first win of the year, Harvick led 6 times for 133 laps, including the final 101 laps, Jerry Nadeau, making his first start since Richmond in 2003, had a middle of the pack day, never getting higher then 15th and would drop out of the race late due to mechanical issues

Congrats to Harvick on his win. Too bad this was an exhibition race. Otherwise, he'd probably be back in Chase contention by now.

Until I get some of my cars painted up by a friend, I have to put this mock season on hold but my other series will still be done as normally.
