Race #9 - Capital City 400 Presented by Virginia is for Lovers
The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series made their 9th stop of 2012 at the Richmond International Raceway, in Richmond, Virginia, for the Capital City 400 Presented by Virginia is for Lovers.
Kasey Kahne led the field to the green and would lead for the first 26 laps as Richmond turned out to be warm night as drivers struggled as usual with the short track, as big wrecks would play a big factor and the track turned into a fight for survival as favorites such as Jimmie Johnson, Tony Stewart, Kyle Busch, Denny Hamlin and Brad Keselowski would all be knocked out of the event during the first 100 laps leaving the field with less then 20 cars left on track with three hundred to go.
As only two more drivers would be knocked out in the final three hundred laps, the racing was intense as Kahne, Mark Martin and Juan Pablo Montoya would all spend quite a lot of time up from but one driver who was lying in wait was Dale Earnhardt Jr. who had escaped all the wrecks and worked his way into the Top 5 and then saw a moment to strike and passes Montoya while he was trying to lap Martin Truex Jr. as Dale would go on to score an easy win and basically locked himself into the chase.
Other Noticeables: Dale Earnhardt Jr. scored his 2nd win of the year, Earnhardt Jr. led 1 time for 161 laps, including the final 161 laps, It was the 20th win of his career in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series and his first since Daytona 9 races ago, Jerry Nadeau, making his first start since California in 2003, had a middle of the pack day, never getting higher then 14th and would drop out of the race early due to a wreck, Carl Edwards, who finished 10th, kept his points lead, now 1 point ahead of Ryan Newman
