Race #7 - Norton Twin 125 #1
The CART Series made their 7th stop of 1979 at the Michigan International Speedway, in Brooklyn, Michigan, for the Norton Twin 125 #1.
Mike Mosley led the field and would lead the first eight laps as history was being made as the CART Series ran for the very first time at the two mile Michigan International Speedway as a sold out crowd watched one of the most intense races of the year. With no cautions come out for the third race in a row, drivers battled side by side, sometimes three wide for multiple laps and would have to make one pit stop and once chance to make changes to their cars.
Johnny Rutherford would dominate much of the day, leading over half of the laps but pit strategy would decide who would win as pole sitter Mike Mosley took only two left side tires and would drive around Rutherford late and would hold off Tom Bagley for his first career CART Series win.
Other Noticeables: Mike Mosley scored his 1st win of the year, Mosley led 4 times for 19 laps, including the final 9 laps, It was the 1st win of his career in the CART Series in his 6th start, Rick Mears, who finished 6th, kept his points lead, leading Gordon Johncock by 627 points
