Race #20 - Virginia Is For Lovers 200
The NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series made their 20th stop of 1997 at the Richmond International Raceway, in Richmond, Virginia, for the Virginia Is For Lovers 200.
Ken Schrader led the field to the green flag as he would lead for the first twenty three laps as for the third year in a row the Richmond race turned out to be one of great racing, drivers gaining points and a surprising winner for the second year in a row. Championship contender Jack Sprague would pass Schrader and dominated the night while points leader Rich Bickle struggled to stay in the Top 10 as eleven cautions would fly during the night race and a late caution would come out with less then twenty to go setting up what would be a ten lap dash to the finish.
Barry Bodine, son of team owner Geoffrey Bodine, came into the race as Geoff Bodine Racing has been looking for a sponsor ever since Tammy Jo Kirk lost her sponsor and was released from her ride. Bodine started second and stayed in the Top 10 all day long and found himself in second when the green came back out and stayed right in Sprague's trail as the lap traffic of Bryan Reffner would give Barry the chance he needed as he drove under Sprague and would hold him off for his first win of his short NASCAR career.
