1990 Valleydale Meats 500 NASCAR's return to Thunder Valley was heralded by a terrifying crash at the Busch Grand National race on Saturday: Nothing of this severity occurred in the Winston Cup Series race, thankfully. What did happen, though, was a long, drawn-out battle for the lead between Dale Earnhardt and Andy Sammonds in the second half of the race. In the end, Earnhardt held off Sammonds for his second win of the season. With his strong finish, Sammonds shot up to second in points, right behind Bill Elliott. Katie Sammonds remains in sixth after a top 20 finish. Next stop: Milwaukee Mile.

1990 Pabst Blue Ribbon 400 The historic Milwaukee Mile was added to the Winston Cup schedule in 1989, and this year, continues playing that role. The first part of the race was all Bill Elliott, but in the second half, he lost the lead to Mark Martin on a bad pit stop, and Martin ran away with the win. Katie Sammonds finished 9th two laps down, Andy Sammonds crashed and finished 37th, and Elliott finished fourth. This saw great change to the points standings: Bill Elliott lost the points lead to Mark Martin, Andy Sammonds fell to fourth, Katie Sammonds moved up to 4th, and Dale Earnhardt sits fourth. Next stop: North Wilkesboro.

1990 First Union 400 North Wilkesboro has been on the NASCAR schedule for as long as anyone can remember, and that tradition continues in 1990. In a nutshell, it was another short-track doozy. The most severe wreck of the day came when Andy Sammonds, Darrell Waltrip, and rookie Rob Moroso got together, and Moroso ended up on his roof. His window net failed and his head impacted the wall, forcing safety crews to cut him from the car and transport him to Wilke Regional Medical Center with head injuries. Other drivers had issues throughout the day in this race of attrition. The race came down to a battle between Rusty Wallace and Katie Sammonds that Wallace ultimately won, winning the race under caution. Andy Sammonds, meanwhile, finished in the top 20 off the lead lap despite a damaged car. He had a few choice words for J.D. McDuffie after the race, as McDuffie rear-ended him while the cars were trying to get on pit road, ruining Sammonds' aerodynamics. Next stop: Martinsville.

RIP Rob Moroso 1968-1990 NASCAR Winston Cup Series rookie Rob Moroso died after a three-car incident at North Wilkesboro Speedway. Moroso's car went on its roof, and the window net was sheared away, allowing Moroso's head to hit the wall. He was cut from the car and airlifted to nearby Wilke Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead of massive head trauma. Investigations by NASCAR revealed that Moroso's window net was made of cheap material, as NASCAR's mandate of providing top-of-the-line safety equipment to teams did not include window nets. After this race, window nets are now provided to teams free of charge. Moroso marks the second fatality at the First Union 400 in a row, after Jim Sauter's death in 1989 at the same race. Moroso died in real-life in 1990, but it was on September 30, four days after his 22nd birthday, ironically hours after the Tyson Holly Farms 400 at North Wilkesboro Speedway.

1990 Hanes Activewear 500 You know what, I'll just skip to the end: Yup, first in-game photo! Also, as you can see, there's the finish to the race. Michael Waltrip edged Rusty Wallace by that much for his third career win. Otherwise, this was a race of attrition, another short track doozy. Plenty of wreckers, plenty of beat-up cars (including Waltrip and Wallace's cars), and plenty of laps run under caution. Wallace is now third in points. Poor performances have caused the Pacific Coast Racing cars to fall back, though not by much, with Andy in fourth, and Katie in fifth. Martinsville has never been kind to the Sammonds Twins. On another note, Dick Moroso found a new driver to replace his recently-deceased son. He is an up-and-coming Busch Series driver named Jeff Burton. Next stop: Talladega.

1990 Winston 500 One of the fastest tracks on the circuit, Alabama International Motor Speedway has been renamed Talladega Superspeedway this season. This was yet another competitive and relatively-clean Talladega race, with only one caution. After innumerable lead changes, it was Bill Elliott who got the win. Rookie Jeff Burton, in his second Winston Cup Series start, finished 7th. Andy Sammonds finished 30th after a bad pit stop, and Katie Sammonds was the victim of the day's only caution, DNF-ing in 39th. Next stop: Pike's Peak. I would now like to take this time to pose a question: HOW DO YOU MAKING THE RACING AT DAYTONA AND TALLADEGA BETTER? It's like the cars are on a conveyor belt, as Griffdawg once put it. They move up, lead for a lap, then just move to the high side without making any attempt to block, get freight-trained, move to the back, rinse and repeat! This isn't how they race in real-life! Is there anything I can do with the track.ini to improve the racing at Daytona and Talladega and make it look realistic? The racing at Coca-Cola, Progressive, and Riki is awesome, by comparison.

1990 Coor's 400 For the second year in a row, Pike's Peak International Raceway plays host to two NASCAR Winston Cup Series events. The first of two is the Coor's 400. This was an average race. Passing was pretty good, and there weren't any major crashes. But, the big story is the winner. After much heartbreak and frustration, Morgan Shepard is finally back in victory lane for the first time since the 1986 Motorcraft 500 at Atlanta. Geoff Bodine finished second, and Katie Sammonds third. Following the race, Katie Sammonds has moved up to fourth in points, Andy Sammonds has fallen back to ninth, and Morgan Shepard is now sixth in standings. Next stop: Charlotte for two weeks. Get ready for The Winston VI!

1989 Winston Open Yes, it's that time again. The Winston Open is the race to determine who gets into the main event. Contested over 140 laps, this race was won by Lennie Haddenberger. Legends Race In real-life, there was race with retired NASCAR drivers in the legends oval at Charlotte Motor Speedway. I, however, have taken such a concept to its logical conclusion, and instead used the 70SS mod to hold a 200-lap race. This Legend Race saw many, many retired drivers turn out in their old cars (and a few drivers from the era who are still active, such as Richard Petty, Dave Marcis, and Dick Trickle). The race was also the first time Bobby Allison got back into a car after his 1988 career-ending crash at Pocono. The race was exciting, but it was Donnie Allison who took the checkers. The field for The Winston VI has been set: * Terry Labonte * Dale Earnhardt * Andy Sammonds * Katie Sammonds * Darrell Waltrip * Michael Waltrip * Rusty Wallace * Mark Martin * Morgan Shepard * Alan Kulwicki * Harry Gant * Kyle Petty * Ken Schrader * Sterling Marlin * Lennie Haddenberger Keep it here.

Have you tried decreasing the drafting distance in the Daytona/Talladega track.ini?
