1990 Miller Genuine Draft 400 Heading into the fall, this is when NASCAR season goes into overdrive. Richmond is an example of this, being yet another race of attrition. The PCR cars did well early on, but ultimately, Katie fell victim to yet another lap car incident, while Andy led for a bit before being relegated off the lead lap. Again, the winner was Mark Martin, and again, he closed the gap on Bill Elliott in points, now to 64. Our next stop is Dover.

1990 Peak AntiFreeze 500 Dover Downs, AKA The Monster Mile, was site of an epic struggle. Early in the going, it was once again Brother vs Sister, as Andy and Katie Sammonds fought for the lead. Alas, Katie wrecked once more after yet ANOTHER incident with lap traffic. Andy, meanwhile, led for much of the race, fighting with Michael Waltrip, before he, too, ran afoul of a lap car that couldn't hold its line. Though missing the front fenders, Sammonds stilled managed to drive to a second-place finish. He left Dover with a new nickname: The Determinator. Meanwhile, Waltrip looked to be on track to win, but his car suddenly careened into the wall on the front stretch. Instead, Bill Elliott won, and widened his points lead over Mark Martin to 171. Next stop: Martinsville.

1990 Goody's 500 The stars of the NASCAR Winston Cup Series returned to the Paperclip to continue the 1990 campaign. Katie Sammonds started on pole, but during a pre-race interview, stated she didn't expect to finish. And she didn't, having yet ANOTHER incident with a lap car that took her out of the race. Andy, meanwhile, was a contender all day, ending up finishing seventh. For him, that was enough of a victory, as Martinsville has a history of being unkind to him. Mark Martin was the favorite to win, but he ultimately finished second to Dale Earnhardt. Despite this, he still finished ahead of Bill Elliott, knocking the points deficit down to 138. North Wilkesborough is next on the schedule.

NASCAR Investigating Foul Play Regarding Katie Sammonds and Lap Traffic Incidents NASCAR has launched an investigation into why lap cars have been crashing into defending series champion Katie Sammonds. Drivers who have done so have refused interview, causing further suspicion. Alan Kulwicki was immediately ruled out as the mastermind, as he allowed investigators access to his home, where they found no evidence that he was in contact with drivers normally considered "backmarkers".

1990 Tyson Holly Farms 400 The 1990 season continued at North Wilkesborough, one of the most unique short tracks on the schedule. Yet another race of attrition, Dale Earnhardt looked like he was on track to win. After the last restart, though, the polesitter managed to pull past him for the win, and the Unocal 76 Challenge. Who was the polesitter? It was Katie Sammonds. The track she had finished second at in April was now conquered by her. Andy Sammonds finished 15th, two laps down. In the points standings, the gap between Mark Martin and Bill Elliott remains at 138. Next week, we'll be back at Charlotte Motor Speedway for the Mello Yello 500.

1990 Mello Yello 500 A relatively caution-free race, the yellow flew only once towards the end. An exciting race, eight different drivers led. Dale Earnhardt was again on track to win, but with two laps remaining, Katie Sammonds once again passed him for her fifth career win, and her second in a row. Katie had won at Charlotte once before, in the 1989 edition of The Winston. Terry Labonte was the only other car besides Sammonds and Earnhardt who finished on the lead lap. Andy Sammonds finished 9th, and Mark Martin 4th. Martin is now 19 points behind Bill Elliott. The Sammonds Twins are feeling good heading to their hometown track, San Jose Superspeedway.

1990 Silicon Valley 500 San Jose Superspeedway is an interesting specimen amongst the five restrictor-plate tracks currently on the circuit. It has the narrowest track surface, and a unique pit exit with a banked turn. This is also home turf for Pacific Coast Racing. Several large wrecks broke out, the first being on Lap 2, and the second also coming on Lap 2 while racing back to the caution. Andy Sammonds was involved in this second wreck, and it also saw Phil Parsons go on his roof. The race hadn't reached Lap 35 before over half the field had wrecked. Katie Sammonds led a good portion of the race, but she ended up finishing off the lead lap. She still came home sixth, though, and is poised to get back into Top 10 in points. Speaking of which, Bill Elliott once again widened his points lead to 74 over Mark Martin. The winner, meanwhile, was Geoff Bodine. It's back to The Rock for us. North Carolina Speedway is next.

1990 AC Delco 500 Another visit to North Carolina Speedway, another insane race. Andy Sammonds won the pole, and was the car to beat. His hopes for a sweep, though, were dashed when a bad pit stop caused him to go off the lead lap, then he crashed off turn 4. Dale Earnhardt also didn't finish. It was Mark Martin who would survive the chaos and win. Bill Elliott was the first car out of the race with a bad piston, allowing Martin to get the points lead. Katie Sammonds came home third, and in a post-race interview with Dr. Jerry Punch, expressed surprise at her sudden turn of fortune. The last restrictor-plater race of the season is up next, at Coca-Cola Superspeedway in Denver, CO.

1990 Sprite 500 The last restrictor-plate race of the season, the Sprite 500 was touted as the wildcard race. And a wildcard it was. As in, a wild battle for the lead between Andy Sammonds and the Waltrips. But in the end, Andy made a last-lap pass for his second win of the season, and second win at Coca-Cola Superspeedway (his first being in his rookie season). Mark Martin's points lead over Bill Elliott is now up to 74. Next up: Phoenix.

1990 Checker 500 Situated in the Arizona Desert, Phoenix International Raceway hosted the NASCAR Winston Cup Series this past Sunday. The fight for the championship between Mark Martin and Bill Elliott has become rather heated, and in this race, it was on full display. Martin's determination to win shined in the end, and he took home the victory once more. Katie Sammonds managed to come home third, and she is really loving her turn of fortune. The penultimate race of the 1990 Winston Cup Series will be held at the fan-favorite Riverside International Raceway, the final road course race of the season.
