1990 Budweiser 500

The penultimate race of the 1990 season also decided the championship. Only one caution came out when Mark Martin slid into the gravel trap off turn one, but he continued. The race saw minimal passing, and that's just what Katie Sammonds was banking on, as she cruised to her third win of the year.

The last race of the season will be at Atlanta. Not that it matters anymore...

Mark Martin Clinches 1990 NASCAR Winston Cup Series Championship

After chasing down Bill Elliott in the points battle, Martin has clinched the championship. Reports in the garage at Riverside said he was "ecstatic", and apparently went out drinking that night in downtown Los Angeles.

In real-life, Martin would have won the championship had it not been for that 46 point penalty at Richmond. If you ask me, NASCAR was rigging the championship in Dale Earnhardt's favor.

1990 Atlanta Journal 500

The last race of the season has, for many years, been at Atlanta International Speedway. Last year was an emotional title fight, as Katie Sammonds won the 1989 championship.

Not this year. There weren't any stakes this time around. Mark Martin had already clinched the championship at Riverside last Sunday. In spite of this, he tried going for another win here, but finished off the lead lap. Meanwhile, the PCR cars managed to claw their way back onto the lead lap, with Andy Sammonds finishing tenth, and Katie twelfth. Both considered it a good end to the season.

Brett Bodine, meanwhile, closed out the season with his first career win.

Tragedy struck during a pit cycle when Ricky Rudd spun on pit road and hit Bill Elliott, killing tire changer Mike Rich.
