Race #2: Alltel 200 @ North Carolina Speedway
Qualifying
Ryan Newman shocks the world by qualifying on the front row in just his first career start for Penske Racing. Clay Rogers, however, barely squeezes past the provisional positions in his first start in Robbie Reiser's Chevrolet. Chad Little, the only scheduled full-time driver to DNQ at Daytona, qualifies in the top 25.

SummaryKevin Harvick, who failed to qualify for the 2000 Alltel 200, wins an extremely emotional race--the first big NASCAR race since Dale Earnhardt's death. Of course, Harvick was named Earnhardt's replacement for the 2001 season. Ryan Newman looked to play spoiler in his first career race, but ended up with a podium finish and some laps led at one of the most difficult tracks on the circuit. Rookie Greg Biffle takes an early points lead thanks to two strong outings the first two weeks.
Caution 1: Laps 76-79: Debris
During the second round of pit stops, debris was found on the racetrack.
Caution 2: Laps 83-86: #49, 1, 36 accident frontstretch
Shortly after the first restart, Robbie Faggart had a tire go down coming out of turn 4 and nearly wrecked the field--thankfully, only a couple of cars were involved. Todd Bodine, who was leading during the caution, had a tire failure on lap 83 that caused him to retire from the race.
Caution 3: Laps 98-99: #14, 10, 77, 59, 86, 25, 1, 11 accident backstretch
With just a few laps to go, an impatient Jacob Labrecque drove up the track with Larry Foyt, who hit the wall and lost control, collecting several drivers. Kelly Denton ended up on his roof, sliding across the backstretch into turn 3, where he went up the banking and collected Chad Chaffin before flipping back on his wheels. This cost Jeff Green a top 10 finish. The race ended under caution due to this, with Kevin Harvick as the leader.
