Summary
Jeff Green and Matt Kenseth traded the lead most of the race, but Kenseth prevailed in the end. This was a very clean, mostly attrition-free race, with just one DNF when Mark Green's gearbox failed on the white flag lap. Greg Biffle builds on his points lead with his second-place finish, the best of his short career.
Caution 1 (Laps 7-9): #26, 14 accident turn 3 The only caution of the race was thanks to a run-in between two drivers who had to start at the rear and work their way forward. Larry Foyt was running right behind Bobby Hamilton, Jr. but rear-ended him which sent them both into the wall. Both had severe enough damage to be taken out of contention for a good finish.

Race #4: Aaron's 312 @ Atlanta Motor SpeedwayQualifyingRookie Jacob Labrecque surprises everyone by qualifying on the pole after showing little speed at "car tracks" Daytona and Las Vegas. Ryan Newman follows up his impressive outside pole at North Carolina with a fourth here. P.J. Jones had some issues in qualifying and will have to take a provisional after a slow time.

Summary
Many drivers traded the lead for the first half of the race, but with the help of a few cautions Jason Keller fought his way from the bottom half of the starting grid to the lead and led over half the race. A late-race restart nearly gave the win to Elton Sawyer, but Keller ultimately ended up with the trophy. Four of the top six drivers started outside the top 20, including the top three in Keller, Sawyer, and Tony Raines as well as Hank Parker, Jr. who earns his first top ten of 2001.
Caution 1 (Laps 3-5): #02, 2, 43, 7, 38, 61, 74, 48, 16, 49 accident turn 1 The front of the pack got aggressive early as there was four-wide action, which did not work for Ryan Newman, Kevin Harvick, or Jay Sauter, and the chain reaction and pile-up went all the way back to Kenny Wallace, David Starr, and Carl Long at the back of the pack.
Caution 2 (Laps 8-11): #27, 37 accident turn 4 The pair of BrewCo teammates got together at the beginning of Turn 3 and tried their hardest to save it but both spun out in Turn 4.
Caution 3 (Laps 92-95): #92 accident turn 1 Michael Waltrip got into Jimmie Johnson in turn 1 and spun him into the wall, setting up a fantastic late-race battle.

Pretty good start, and it's interesting that you inserted yourself into the season, though it would have been nice if you had clarified who you were driving for before diving into this, just so we have an idea as to how you're doing. But other than that, keep up the good work!

But other than that, keep up the good work! My mistake. I'm driving for my own team currently. Who knows, if I impress maybe a top team can pull me in! (I seriously have no idea at this point. We'll see how everything goes during the summer stretch, which I haven't quite reached yet). I'll update the first post.

Race #5: SunCom 200 @ Darlington RacewayQualifyingKevin Harvick takes his first pole of 2001, while Ryan Newman once again qualifies on the front row. Only 41 cars entered this race, including a couple start and parks. Blaise Alexander's #8 Armando Fitz team ran out of funds and couldn't enter this race, as well as Brad Baker's #28. P.J. Jones was released from his Phoenix Racing team, and Jimmy Spencer will step in temporarily. Todd Bodine had an extremely loose racecar and, after a strong start to qualifying, had to settle for a provisional. Steve Park is making his first start of the year.

SummaryThe race was relatively clean after the lap 2 crash. Kevin Harvick led from the pole for a bit, then Jeff Green took over until about halfway, but Matt Kenseth dominated when it mattered and led most of the second half of the race. Green was looking strong still but his car overheated and died on him on the final lap. Rookies Marty Houston and Larry Foyt earned their respective Darlington Stripes in this one, among others.
Caution 1 (Laps 3-6): #33, 66, 74, 23, 00, 59 accident turn 2 Tony Raines, who had been consistently in the top ten all year after a disappointing 2000, came down on Tim Fedewa. Fedewa spun into Chad Little and collected Scott Wimmer and Todd Bodine, while Raines almost saved it but came up on Rich Bickle and the two of them wrecked.

SummaryOnly three different drivers led this race--polesitter and race winner Ryan Newman, Kevin Harvick, and Jeff Green. Newman was the one to prevail in the end. Greg Biffle finishes outside the top ten for the first time all season and loses a small portion of his points lead over Tony Raines, who bounced back from early heartbreak at Darlington to earn a well-deserved top ten.
Caution 1 (Laps 2-6): #17, 98, 00, 77 accident turn 3 A bunched up field at the start of a Bristol race usually leads to trouble, and this was no different. Elton Sawyer almost spun Matt Kenseth coming out of turn 2, but Kenseth managed to save it on the backstretch, only to get spun into the outside wall once again by Sawyer. Kenseth came down the track right in the path of Kelly Denton, and they had a hard head-on collision.
Caution 2 (Laps 51-55): #6, 26 accident turn 2 Joe Bessey ran up the track and into the turn 2 wall, came down onto Bobby Hamilton, Jr., and spun on the backstretch.
Caution 3 (Laps 70-74): #99, 55 accident turn 1 Michael Waltrip, Mark Green, and Sammy Sanders were three wide heading into turn 1, which doesn't work at Bristol, Waltrip was spun into the outside wall and turned over several times, but only had minor damage and was actually able to continue the race.
Caution 4 (Laps 78-82): #28 spin frontstretch Brad Teague spun Brad Baker on the frontstretch after a restart. Baker ended up with no damage.
Caution 5 (Laps 115-119): #98 spin backstretch Tony Raines spun a damaged Elton Sawyer on the backstretch, setting up a shootout to end the race.

Race #7: Jani-King 300 @ Texas Motor SpeedwayQualifying Jeff Burton takes his first pole of 2001 in his second start of the season. Mike Dillon was injured in a testing crash at the new Nashville Superspeedway, so Mike Skinner is taking over temporarily. This is a field heavy with Buschwhackers, with Burton, Skinner, Matt Kenseth, Joe Nemechek, Kevin Lepage, Todd Bodine, and Jimmy Spencer all racing for the win, and nothing more. Shawna Robinson is making her first start in a three-race deal with Michael Waltrip; Robinson is running the full ARCA schedule.

Summary
As was typical of Texas races early in its history, we saw our fair share of cautions and attrition. The high-speed cookie-cutter provided for plenty of action, wrecks, and engine woes. Mike Skinner, in his first race as temporary replacement of Mike Dillon, dominated the race, but in the end Todd Bodine prevailed, evading the poor luck that hindered him at North Carolina, Darlington, and Bristol, leading the last 24 laps en route to victory. A few cars didn't make it on fuel, as they thought the fourth caution would give them enough to make it to the end which was not the case. Greg Biffle continues to lead the points, earning another top 10 after some struggles at Bristol.
Caution 1 (Laps 47-50): #10, 02 accident frontstretch This was a chain reaction like none other. In turn 3, Scott Wimmer turned Elton Sawyer hard into the wall. Sawyer saved it, but his damaged forced him into the pits. Jeff Green got the message too late and was unable to pass Sawyer on the outside as he tried entering pit road. Ryan Newman then slammed into Green, who pinballed between the frontstretch wall and Newman, ultimately spinning in front of the field. Thankfully, no one else was involved.
Caution 2 (Laps 54-57): #57, 23, 61, 43, 2, 18, 20, 33, 27, 71 accident frontstretch The Big One happened when the leaders were trying to pass the slower car of Robbie Faggart on the restart. Jason Keller clipped Faggart exiting Turn 4. Faggart miraculously saved it, but Keller could not and there was nowhere to go for the field behind him. Scott Wimmer got the worst of it, taking several hard hits.
Caution 3 (Laps 61-64): #92, 18 accident backstretch On the ensuing restart, Larry Foyt, Jimmie Johnson, and Jeff Purvis got three wide on the backstretch. Purvis clipped Johnson, sending them both into the inside wall with Johnson spinning. Johnson did a 360 before running once again, but when Jeff Purvis was re-entering the groove in turns 3 and 4 Hank Parker, Jr. failed to go high when he needed to and slammed into the back of Purvis, sending Parker spinning. Kevin Lepage, racing back to the line, went full speed into Parker. Thankfully, everyone was okay.
Caution 4 (Laps 67-70): #49, 37, 59, 46, 34, 92 accident frontstretch This one played out like Caution 2 but with three-wide action; cars were trying to get by Robbie Faggart, but David Green clipped him. This time, Faggart spun in front of the field. While racing back to the line, Shawna Robinson blew an engine exiting turn 4. Unable to get down to the apron, she was spun by Tim Fedewa.
Caution 5 (Laps 84-87): #26, 37, 27, 74, 34 accident frontstretch Bobby Hamilton, Jr. blew a tire on the frontstretch and tried to get down to the bottom, but was rear-ended by Kevin Grubb and spun into the wall. David Green was racing back to the line but didn't predict Hamilton's spin path correctly and plowed into him.

Race #8: Pepsi 300 @ Nashville Superspeedway Presented by Mapco/WilliamsQualifyingMike Skinner, still relieving the injured Mike Dillon, takes his first pole of the season at the new Nashville Superspeedway. Jimmy Spencer is stepping aside from the #1 to let Bobby Hamilton race at his new hometown track, while Clay Rogers makes his second start of the year for Robbie Reiser. Kelly Denton's #77 team never made it to the entry list after struggling all season, while Chad Chaffin was released from the Ed Rensi machine after a rough seven starts while David Donahue takes his place. With this being the first non-companion race for Cup, we also see a slew of other new drivers and teams, including Andy Santerre making his third start of the year, Steadman Marlin making his second career start, and Frank Kimmel and Dan Pardus making their first career starts. Donahue is still eligible for Rookie of the Year, though is a longshot for even a podium after a strong start from Greg Biffle and some good runs from Scott Wimmer and Jacob Labrecque.

SummaryMike Skinner showed that a rough start in Cup does not translate to poor driving ability. A new track is a huge test to see who really is the best driver, and Mike Skinner proved that, leading all but 15 laps. This was a fairly clean race, with one big accident early and a last-lap spin on the frontstretch in front of the leader by Tony Raines, who fell several positions as a result.
Caution 1 (Laps 22-25): #46, 48, 26, 16, 7, 92, 18, 71, 27 accident frontstretch Another one-caution race, and another caution that shows the dangers of racing to the line. Exiting turn 4, Ashton Lewis came down on Kenny Wallace, sending Lewis spinning. Wallace slid up the track into Bobby Hamilton, Jr. who pinballed off the wall and into Mark Day, sending them both spinning. Both cars entered the racing line (past the start-finish line, so cars were just starting to get slowed down), right into the path of Randy LaJoie, Jeff Purvis, and others. Purvis squeezed LaJoie into the wall, sending him on his side, and the force from that lifted Day's car onto his roof and allowed LaJoie to climb on top of an upside-down Day. LaJoie ended up flipping himself a couple of times before coming to a rest near turn 1. Fortunately, everybody was okay.

SummaryJoe Nemechek received damage while slowing down under caution then lost a lap for a flat tire, so he was a nonfactor. This race had plenty of cautions and attrition overall; Greg Biffle was a victim of early mechanical woes, which put a big blow on his points lead after some steady gains on Tony Raines and Mike McLaughlin. Many cars had their share of the lead, but in the end Jimmy Spencer, the dominant car overall, took his first BGN win since 1998.
Caution 1 (Laps 11-14): Fluid turns 3/4 Ashton Lewis broke his water pump a few laps before, and drivers reported fluid on the track, so cleanup was required. While slowing down, Marty Houston and Joe Nemechek got together, giving both of them damage.
Caution 2 (Laps 27-30): #6, 17, 74, 10, 34 accident turn 3 Matt Kenseth, Chad Little, and Jeff Green were three wide down the backstretch with Joe Bessey also on Little's inside, and for whatever reason Shawna Robinson wanted to make it four wide. This didn't work; Little came down on Joe Bessey and spun him hard into the outside wall with both Jeff and David Green, and Robinson spun Kenseth into that pileup. Little was squeezed in between David Green and the wall and rolled onto his nose and into the catchfence, which did its job. Little went roof-first into the fence (not hard contact at all, thankfully) and came down on all four wheels. Bessey was a little shaken but everyone was okay overall.
Caution 3 (Laps 38-41): #65, 63, 61 accident turn 3 Tim Sauter, three wide with Shane Hall and Bobby Gerhart, came down on Hall who was pushed into Gerhart. Gerhart and Hall spun, while Sauter slammed the turn 3 wall.
Caution 4 (Laps 51-54): #2, 26, 66, 59 accident backstretch Kenny Wallace spun Kevin Harvick into Bobby Hamilton, Jr. exiting turn 2, and the two of them slid down the backstretch. Tim Fedewa didn't see where they were going and hit Hamilton head-on. Bickle had nowhere to go from there. Harvick was looking to benefit from Greg Biffle's engine failure early on, but retired from the race and couldn't do so.
