Ever since the full 2001 BGN carset was released months ago, I've been trying my hardest to recreate this season (adding myself as a full-time driver, driving for my own team). Using heavily edited ratings and proper entry lists per race, this season should be highly realistic, save for the distance being halved (for my own sanity). The first several races have been done already and I will post summaries of them over the next few days. Without further ado, here is the 2001 NASCAR Busch Grand National season!

Caution Flags: 4 (14 laps) Lead Changes: 18 (9 drivers) Weather: Clear, 41 °F, East 3 mph
Summary
Joe Nemechek dominated from the pole, leading 32 of 60 laps. Other drivers had turns at the lead such as Jimmie Johnson, Todd Bodine, Jeff Green, and Scott Wimmer, but Nemechek's Pontiac was clearly the fastest of the bunch.
Caution 1 (Laps 7-9): Debris The first caution came out for debris.
Caution 2 (Laps 24-26): Debris The second caution also came out for debris, with everyone still on the lead lap and only a few cars (Smith, Hall, Denton) out of the lead draft. Pit stops occurred; Blaise Alexander was hit hard coming out of the pits by Steve Grissom, which forced Alexander to retire with an oil pressure issue.
Caution 3 (Laps 34-37): #26, 2, 37, 10, 18, 11, 46, 42, 98, 43, 61, 99, 6, 36, 19, 35 accident turn 3 The Big One happened on lap 33 when the front of the pack thought four wide was a brilliant idea. Jeff Green, Kevin Harvick, and Bobby Hamilton, Jr. were three wide for third when Matt Kenseth made a move to the apron. Kenseth had no trouble squeezing by, but there was no room and the other three wrecked. Many drivers towards the back of the pack had nowhere to go.
Caution 4 (Laps 56-59): #16, 27, 77 accident turn 4 David Starr, already slow on the track, turned down on Jamie McMurray in turn 4, collecting Kelly Denton. Starr was unable to continue. Larry Foyt blew a motor towards the beginning of this caution period; he was running in the top 20.

Ryan Newman shocks the world by qualifying on the front row in just his first career start for Penske Racing. Clay Rogers, however, barely squeezes past the provisional positions in his first start in Robbie Reiser's Chevrolet. Chad Little, the only scheduled full-time driver to DNQ at Daytona, qualifies in the top 25. Caution Flags: 3 (10 laps) Lead Changes: 7 (4 drivers) Weather: Clear, 54 °F, East 8 mph Summary Kevin Harvick, who failed to qualify for the 2000 Alltel 200, wins an extremely emotional race--the first big NASCAR race since Dale Earnhardt's death. Of course, Harvick was named Earnhardt's replacement for the 2001 season. Ryan Newman looked to play spoiler in his first career race, but ended up with a podium finish and some laps led at one of the most difficult tracks on the circuit. Rookie Greg Biffle takes an early points lead thanks to two strong outings the first two weeks.
Caution 1: Laps 76-79: Debris During the second round of pit stops, debris was found on the racetrack.
Caution 2: Laps 83-86: #49, 1, 36 accident frontstretch Shortly after the first restart, Robbie Faggart had a tire go down coming out of turn 4 and nearly wrecked the field--thankfully, only a couple of cars were involved. Todd Bodine, who was leading during the caution, had a tire failure on lap 83 that caused him to retire from the race.
Caution 3: Laps 98-99: #14, 10, 77, 59, 86, 25, 1, 11 accident backstretch With just a few laps to go, an impatient Jacob Labrecque drove up the track with Larry Foyt, who hit the wall and lost control, collecting several drivers. Kelly Denton ended up on his roof, sliding across the backstretch into turn 3, where he went up the banking and collected Chad Chaffin before flipping back on his wheels. This cost Jeff Green a top 10 finish. The race ended under caution due to this, with Kevin Harvick as the leader.

Yeah, the guy who finished 9th in points in real life missed the 1st race. Touché.
The 74 didn't run the full season in 2000, so they were low on owner's points, even compared to the 19 which DNQ'd several races. This is a similar scenario as Kevin Harvick the year before, who missed Rockingham due to having no owner's points but was still third in points, and Jeff Green the year before that, who also missed Rockingham but finished second in points. And later on in Cup, Greg Biffle DNQ'd Las Vegas in 2003 but still was a ROTY contender throughout the season. This was perhaps the biggest hole in the provisional system at the time.
